"Gemuk Girls", which means fat girls in Malay, pits a feisty mother, called Kartini, against her strait—laced daughter, Juliana, who is about to enter politics. Their world starts to unravel when they receive shocking news about Kartini’s father who was detained as a political prisoner during the 1960s. From then on, the floodgates of the family’s emotional past are thrown open. Actress and 2008 Young Artist Award winner Aidli Mosbit, who plays Kartini, hopes the play will encourage more young Singaporeans to take an interest in politics. She said, “Most of the people my age and younger are so apathetic. We don’t even care about politics and what have you. I’m really happy to do this because I would like people to come and watch and tell themselves (that) politics is not such a bad word... It’s in our everyday lives.” “Gemuk Girls” will be playing at The Necessary Stage Black Box at Marine Parade Community Building.
