PETALING JAYA: A new monkeypox (mpox) case has been detected in Malaysia, says the Health Ministry.

The latest case, a clade II infection, was reported on Monday (Nov 25).

“The case involves a 34-year-old local man who travelled overseas in the past 21 days and was involved in high-risk activities,” the ministry said in a statement on Wednesday (Nov 27).

“The (patient) started experiencing rashes on the hands, body and legs since Nov 15, and sought treatment on Nov 23,” it added.

The ministry said the patient is in stable condition, undergoing isolation and treatment.

“Close contacts are being identified and monitored for symptoms and signs of the disease for 21 days from the last day of exposure,” it added.

The latest case brings the total number of cases detected so far this year to two.

Since July last year, a total of 11 cases have been detected.

The ministry said mpox is an orthopoxvirus, and is transmissible between humans through close exposure to rashes and blisters.

Infection can also happen through exposure to respiratory fluids during intimate relationships.

The ministry said mpox symptoms include fever, rashes and blisters on the face, hands, legs, genitals and eyes.

The incubation period is between five and 21 days.

“Mpox cases would recover on their own without any specific treatment,” it said.

The ministry said it would continue to monitor the situation and advised the public to keep up with the latest developments through its social media channels.

So what's the problem? Why is it news worthy?
