THE new 'baby' Rolls- Royce code-named 200EX is expected to more than double the number of cars sold by the ultra-luxury marque in its first year of production.

<TABLE class=picBoxL cellSpacing=2 width=100 align=left><TBODY><TR><TD> </TD></TR><TR class=caption><TD>Built to order: The 200EX offers designers and engineers the opportunity for real-world innovation and has been used to showcase new components and engineering techniques, as well as exterior and interior designs </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>The 200EX is a design study for a contemporary four-door saloon and shows the direction for RR4, a new model series from Rolls-Royce due for production in 2010. It will be the fourth model after the Phantom limousine, Phantom Drophead Coupe convertible and Phantom Coupe.
Goodwood, England- based Rolls-Royce sold 1,212 cars last year and expects a similar number this year. But with the introduction of the RR4 in 2010, the BMW Group-owned carmaker expects volume to more than double in a full production year.
The 200EX was in Singapore last week as part of its world tour. It arrived from New York and will proceed to several other Asia-Pacific destinations before returning to the US and Europe.
The car was viewed by Rolls-Royce dealers and customers from the region at the newly opened Capella Singapore Resort on Sentosa. The seven-star hotel, owned by Pontiac Land Group, is the first in Singapore to have a pair of Rolls-Royce Phantom limousines in its fleet.
The 200EX, which was accompanied by senior Rolls-Royce management, is about half a metre shorter than a standard-wheelbase Phantom. But the four-door saloon is still very large at 5.4 metres long. This new Rolls-Royce model series, based on the platform of the new BMW 7 Series, will have the same rear-hinged coach doors as the Phantom but a new V12 engine. The 6.75-litre naturally aspirated direct injection power plant produces 453 hp and a whopping 720 Newton-metres of torque.
Rolls-Royce says that like its experimental models of the past, the 200EX offers designers and engineers the opportunity for real-world innovation and has been used to showcase new components and engineering techniques, as well as exterior and interior designs.
No name for the model has been announced, but further details about RR4 will be released over the coming months. One thing is certain, though - the carmaker does not expect to grow production beyond a few thousand cars each year for the foreseeable future to maintain exclusivity and quality. Just like the Phantom models, every RR4 will be built to specific order.
In Singapore, 12 Rolls- Royce cars were sold last year, including four Drophead Coupes and one Coupe. 'With the introduction of the 200EX, we believe sales will continue to be good,' said Karsono Kwee, executive chairman of the Eurokars Group, which represents Rolls-Royce in Singapore.
