Sillypore is a unique place.

Foreigners can stay here for more than 30 years holding blue ICs without changing to citizenship. Their sons can be educated here from kindergarten to university without serving NS. They have a 2-year headstart in the job market and their position further enhanced because their work need not be disrupted by reservist training. Employers love to employ this kind of people.

It is quite different from other countries, Australia for example, where a PR is given up to 5 years to convert to citizen. Otherwise the PR status will expired. It is understandable that some people may change their mind during the trial period and go back to their home countries. (Just like the China girl in Sinkiepore.)

In Sillypore, PRs can be totally comfortable, reaping the economic benefits and staying here for a long time without committing. They are in every sense of the word just "permanent" residents.

Netizens, as usual, are wrong with their cowboy stance and untargeted approach. It also gives plenty of ammunition for running-dogs to defend the situation, saying the China girl was just holding a blue IC. What netizens should do is to lobby the MIW to impose a 5-year PR limit like other countries.

In passing, I would like to say something about the abuse of the term "sinicization". There is little or no sinicization of Sinkiepore. The local Chinese are just as Sinkie as before. It is the huge presence of mainland Chinese that gives the impression of sinicization. That portion can be erased overnight through a policy change. One very small scale example is the cleaning up of Geylang.

I have to agree with you on people being a PR for 30 years without their sons having to serve NS.I can personally vouch for this. Some of my schoolmates whose parents are PR never served NS.....but arguing that serving NS alone make PR & Newcitizens as good as locals is untenable..If so I am sure there are millions from third world countries like Mynmmar who would willingly do a 2 year stint to trade for SG citizenships.

The problem is that despite locals whose fathers and sons having served NS are placed on the same plate as PR & Newcitizens overnight. This is grossly unfair. Thus our citizenship is grossly cheapened.

But I do agree with you that PAP can put a stop to this with a stroke of a pen.But MIW would not....that IS the real problem.

Baey Yam Keng, Tanjong Pagar GRC:
“As Zhang Yuanyuan grew up in China, she may miss her family and friends back home. Similarly, there are many Singaporeans living overseas who still regard Singapore as their homeland and will return eventually.”

Why than put the PR on the same plate as locals?

Fuck You PAP !

They be here anyway for some blue collar stint. What is more attractive when SAF child care will throw in a few set of fashionable uniforms for work in Singapore .

I'm not sure which visa class you are referring to, but definitely the PR do not "expire" as you have suggested. You might be thinking of the 5 year multi-entry label that has the words "Permanant Resident" attached to it. At the bottom it states "Allow to remain in Australia indefinitely." This is a resident requirement, that I believe is very similar to what Singapore is practicing. Give you a 5 year multi re-entry label, at the end of the 5 years, in order to renew it you need to show you have stayed in Australia or contributed to Australia overseas, like working at a consulate, for 2 years. If you can't, then they won't renew it, hence no more PR status I suppose. You can technically hold an Australian PR as long as you want. There are no time limit to convert etc. I've known of sinkies, for reasons of still owning property back home, that keeps renewing their re-entry label and refuse to get citizenship even though it would make their lives easier.
