Jailed for scalding colleague
By Elena Chong, Court Correspondent
A DELIVERYMAN who poured hot water on a colleague after being provoked was sentenced to 12 weeks' jail on Wednesday.
Kwok Yok Kiong, 48, admitted to pouring hot water over the head and body of Mr Lim Hee Nguang, 47, at a hardware company at Penhas Road in Kallang on Sept 4 last year.
The court heard that Mr Lim was at the office pantry that morning when Kwok caused some boiling water to splatter onto Mr Lim's right forearm while filling his container.
Annoyed, the victim scolded Kwok and both exchanged harsh words. He then challenged Kwok to pour the water on him.
Kwok did so, causing the victim to scream in pain as hot water flowed down his head, neck, shoulder and upper back. The victim called the police.
Pleading for leniency, Kwok's lawyer, Mr Gurdip Singh, said the victim had been nagging and irritating his client of late, and Kwok had tried to avoid Mr Lim as far as possible.
He said the father of two had immediately apologised to the victim and his boss for what had happened.
The lawyer added that the employer was still prepared to retain his client, who had worked there for about nine years.
Kwok, who could have been jailed for up to seven years, fined and caned, had his sentence deferred until Monday.
