SINGAPORE: The National Environment Agency (NEA) booked 15,230 people for smoking offences between April last year and May this year, 9,228 of which were for smoking in newly prohibited areas.

Environment and Water Resources Minister, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan said this in a written response to a question by MP for Nee Soon GRC Ms Lee Bee Wah in Parliament on Monday (July 7).

In January last year, the Government extended the smoking ban in public places to include common areas in residential buildings, sheltered walkways and bus shelters. Dr Balakrishnan said NEA's enforcement teams patrol more than 90 hotspots daily and enforcement patrols are also conducted in areas identified as a result of public feedback.

He also pointed out there were about 5,700 reports from members of the public during the same period of smoking offences at common areas of HDB blocks. - CNA/ec
