ST FORUM (4/6/09)

NEA needs more enforcement manpower

I REFER to last Friday's report, 'Operators of temporary markets to be licensed', and was shocked that each National Environment Agency (NEA) officer had to inspect 800 food establishments. It was only after a review following the food poisoning cases at Geylang Serai temporary market that this was halved to 400.

It appears that NEA lacks the manpower to constantly review and improve its procedures, as well as effectively enforce the high hygiene standards set and deal effectively and promptly with violations.

NEA should seek more government funding and increase its manpower to undertake its important role of protecting Singaporeans from coming into harm's way, whether through inhaling toxic fumes or consuming contaminated food.

Also, while the present focus is on temporary food markets and centres, I would like NEA's assurance that it has not forgotten to ensure strict standards in food preparation, handling and delivery to households by caterers.

Also, as NEA is updating its food hygiene handbook, can it include topics on the proper way to heat delivered cooked food before consumption? Usually, the food is cooked by the caterers in their kitchens at 3pm to 4pm for delivery at 5pm to 6.30pm, before the food is consumed at 7pm to 8pm.
