"Gutter oil" alleged to have been pumped out of sewers near food outlets in Jurong was not sent to hawkers but used for processing into biodiesel, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said yesterday.

Its investigations into two incidents there found the waste oil was taken from grease traps that collect waste, which is supposed to be disposed of at one of the national water agency PUB's water reclamation plants.

Members of the public spotted a couple extracting the oil in two separate incidents in Jurong.

The NEA said anyone who collects or disposes of such oil illegally can be fined up to $2,000.

The NEA said anyone who collects or disposes of such oil illegally can be fined up to $2,000.

This kind of report makes no sense at all. Most of the used oil for bio fuel is collected directly from restaurants like McDonalds and what not. The biofuel company has a contract to buy them from these restaurants. I doubt if these same companies would buy grease from a cheapo fly by night operations like these 2 guys pumping the gutter oil. What do they do? Pull up to the gate of the biofuel factory and sell the barrel of gutter oil off the back of the truck?
These people collecting gutter oil are not doing for free and out of their environmental heart. To my knowledge, when you dispose off the oil at one of the PUB's water reclamation plant, they don't pay you for it. Has the NEA confirm that these gutter oil pumpers are really turning the oil in at the PUB water plant? I doubt so.
