Recent checks by NEA found signs of rats at eight food outlets in the Orchard Road mall.
Singapore, November 19, 2012
National Environment Agency (NEA) found signs of rat activity at eight food outlets in 313 Somerset Shopping Mall during a recent inspection.
The shops include Food Republic food court and Cold Storage supermarket, according to a statement by NEA.
This follows media reports quoting tenants who had seen rats in toilets and ceilings in some areas of the mall.
NEA has requested the mall management, Land Lease Retail, and food outlets to have a thorough clean-up and seal off all areas which may allow rats to enter their shops.
Officers have worked with individual food shop operators to improve on housekeeping and waste management practices.
Food Republic will work with its stall operators to improve on housekeeping and will ensure that food waste is properly cleared each day, according to an NEA spokesman.
The food court operator will also conduct programmes to educate stall operators on good hygiene practices and carry out more regular audits of their work.
Land Lease will implement a system to monitor the rat situation for hotspots and conduct regular checks for structural defects.
Checks have also been conducted in the common areas of the Somerset MRT station, underpass, and neighbouring construction site for the proposed 20-storey hotel development. To date, no rat infestation has been detected during NEA's monthly inspections.
Enforcement action will be taken against relevant parties.
