IT WAS a winning show of force. The crowd shrieked when armoured vehicles rolled onto the floating platform in Marina Bay on Saturday.
The eight vehicles, including the Leopard tank and Bronco armoured personnel carrier, are part of a six-minute Total Defence Display in this year's National Day Parade.
On Saturday, they wowed the 27,000 spectators at a preview before the rest of the nation watches the actual parade this Sunday.
The armoured vehicles have backup. Should one of the tanks break down, a group of soldiers are on standby to tow it away with the help of a giant crowbar.
They can tow a 28-tonne Primus 155mm self-propelled artillery gun away from the platform within three minutes, said Lance-Corporal Muhammad Shafie Razale, 22.
The full-time national serviceman (NSF) is one of 5,000 people working behind the scenes to ensure that the show goes without a hitch.
They include sound and light engineers as well as more than 100 military doctors and paramedics.
