President Nathan: No change to current policies
Mon, May 18, 2009
SINGAPORE will not change its policies fundamentally to cope with the global economic crisis, as these have proven to be the right ones that position the Republic for the future.
But it will refine some policies and come up with new strategies to help Singapore take advantage of opportunities in a new world order, said President S R Nathan in his address when he opened the second session of the 11th Parliament on Monday night.
For example, it will seek new markets and develop new capabilities in emerging sectors. In politics, the political system will evolve, he said, but did not give details. There are also emerging social stresses which will require delicate management and require citizens and government to work together to strengthen cohesion.
He also urged Singaporeans to build on what they have achieved, "Our success has been the result of right policies, good government, and a united people."
President Nathan also said that Singapore is well prepared for the current crisis, and that it is a good opportunity for the people to bond in these bad times.
"The present world situation is graver than any in our experience. We are well prepared for it. We have been through crises before, and always emerged stronger. This adversity is another opportunity to temper and bond our people."
However, he warned Singapore must be prepared for the changes that will come after the economic crisis is over.
"In the aftermath of the crisis, the redrawn global landscape will be less benign and predictable. It will be a challenging environment for Singapore."
All but lip service again !
