Umno sacks Gopeng Wanita chief
KUALA LUMPUR: Gopeng Wanita Umno chief Datuk Hamidah Osman has been expelled from the party. Announcing this tonight, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who is Umno president, said the decision was made by the supreme council.
“The supreme council has unanimously decided that she is to be expelled and will lose her Umno membership over a breach of discipline,” he told the press after chairing the party's supreme council meeting held in an office in Parliament, this evening. Hamidah had since May been a vocal critic of Najib, and had called for his resignation. She had courted controversy following her open criticisms against the party and how the issues pertaining to 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) were handled. She had also openly criticised Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir in her personal Facebook page.
Hamidah’s sacking follows that of Langkawi Umno member Anina Saadudin, who was also expelled after she took Najib to court over a RM2.6 million political donation. Meanwhile, Najib also announced that for the upcoming Umno general assembly, the Wanita, Puteri and Youth assemblies will be officiated by the leaders of the respective wings. “This was decided upon based on suggestions by the wings themselves. “That is their wish, and the supreme council will accede to their request,” he said. Najib said the decisions made today revolved around the importance of Umno’s direction.
“Among them was that we must see that the party is strong, continues to receive support and the trust of the people. There must be belief from all that Umno is a party which is based on justice, principle and best practices,” he said. Najib said other matters were also discussed at the meeting. However, Najib said no decisions were made. He earlier explained that the meeting had to be done in the vicinity of the Dewan Rakyat to enable its members to be present in Parliament if their presence was required.
“It is not something out of the ordinary. Even the Opposition hold their meetings at their offices within Parliament,” he said.
