KUALA TERENGGANU - The father of the dead newborn baby who was kept inside a school bag for 17 hours has been nabbed.
Terengganu CID chief Asst Comm K. Manoharan said police detained the 19-year-old youth at his home in Cherang Guling, Marang, at 4am yesterday following information gathered from the baby's 16-year-old mother.
"After we managed to get some vital information from the girl, we detained the youth.
"He will be remanded until July 13 to assist in investigations into the case," he said, adding that the incident had been classified as baby-dumping.
ACP Manoharan said initial investigations revealed that the teenagers were not actually a couple but had met up twice last year for casual sex.
"We will investigate further to ascertain if the youth is involved in other crimes as well," he said.
It was reported that the mother's 16-year-old classmate had kept the school bag for 17 hours without realising that the dead baby was inside.
The mother had handed her classmate the bag shortly after giving birth to the baby girl in the school's hostel at about 1am on Tuesday.
Doctors found out about the birth when the mother sought treatment at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital here, complaining of abdominal pains.
The post-mortem showed that the baby was successfully delivered but suffered bruises to her head and had water in her lungs.
