Felt asleep after bonking along the track?

The New Paper

Couple planned to go clubbing
By Bryna Sim
JUST hours before they died, Miss Clara Lee Jing Yu rushed home to get her identity card (IC).
She needed it because she was planning to party at a club in town.
Miss Lee and her boyfriend, Mr Goh Sheng Yao, were to have attended a friend's birthday bash at the club.
But when she couldn't find her IC, they decided to instead hang out at The Rail Mall, a five-minute walk from where their bodies were eventually found.
Mr Goh's family opened up to The New Paper yesterday.
His father said that the boy had hoped to join the Commando unit while doing his national service.
He also wanted to go to university.
But Mr Goh, 19, did not get to fulfil his ambitions.
Instead, he and Miss Lee, 20, were hit by a train at around 5am on Saturday at the track near The Rail Mall in Upper Bukit Timah.
The third-year students from Republic Polytechnic's School of Hospitality were killed on the spot.
'It was not supposed to be this way,' said Mrs Goh, the late Mr Goh's grandmother.
Speaking in Mandarin at the family's Bukit Batok flat yesterday, Mrs Goh said her grandson was going to celebrate a friend's birthday last Friday night.
'My brother said that the birthday party involved clubbing,' said Mr Goh's younger sister, 15.
Mr Goh and Miss Lee would have gone straight to the club, but she did not have her IC with her that night.
So, Mr Goh accompanied her home to Clementi. He waited downstairs while she looked for her IC.
But she couldn't find it.
Mrs Goh believed that the couple then decided to spend time together, instead of heading back to 'Orchard Road' where the club was located.
'They have only been dating for two weeks, so I think they wanted to have a quiet night by themselves,' said Mrs Goh.
The spot they chose was the railway track close to The Rail Mall, which is about a 15-minute bus ride from Miss Lee's house.
Probably tired
Mrs Goh believes that at the time that the accident occurred, her grandson and Miss Lee were probably tired.
'In their sleepy state, they probably took some time to figure out where the train was coming from,' she said.
By the time they reacted, it would have been too late.
'Young people think that they know about trains, but they are really not familiar with how they operate and how fast they can go,' said Mrs Goh.
'It's all too late now. I've already lost my beloved grandson,' she said, on the verge of tears.
Mrs Goh said that her grandson, the eldest of the family's three siblings, was a gem of a boy.
'He really loved his family,' she said.
This sentiment was shared by his sister.
'No matter how busy he was, my brother always took care of me. He would help me with my homework,' she said.
She also said that Mr Goh made it a point to have dinner at home after school, as often as 'five times a week'.
The Goh siblings were close - Mr Goh often shared details of his personal life with his sister, she said.
'In late July, my brother told me that there was a nice girl whom he liked. He showed me her picture, and I told him she was not bad looking,' she said.
The girl was Miss Lee.
Mr Goh was also close to his father.
The elder Mr Goh spoke tenderly of his son and the young man's ambitions.
'We were very close. Our relationship was very good,' he said, adding that his son was 'a very cheerful and happy boy'.
Father and son would often speak about the latter's plans for the future.
Of the polytechnic student's intention to join the Commandos unit, Mr Goh said: 'I told him, that's so tough. Why do you want to be in it? But he replied that he wanted to train up his body, to be fit and strong
