I had done my 1st version for my ex many years ago, and twice updated it. Today I put the fresh version Online in HTML to help a yet another few friends to learn. And I also decided to share it with all who will find it useful.

Basically you print out hardcopy of this and paste it on your cubical's wall near your PC and it is the most useful lookup-table, you need not remember anything except for how to read these Chinese words Correctly. Then look up the same pronunciation word (with 4 variations of 四声）the correct 汉语拼音 is then found.


汉语拼音 of every Chinese word can be found in this table as long as you add your own application of 4 variations ( 四声 ).

Many many different Chinese words are pronounced identically. E.g. 是 ＆ 事 both got identical 汉语拼音 as SHI for purpose of entering into computer. When considering the 4 variations of 四声 actually even more Chinese words got identical 汉语拼音 as SHI for purpose of entry, including 是 ＆ 事 ＆ 时 ＆ 诗 ＆ 史 etc - actually a few dozen words.

Knowing this, you can look up this table and found that all of these words that pronounced like 是 is SHI for 汉语拼音 entry purpose.

How you use the table?

You begin by guessing the initial 1 or 2 letters of the 汉语拼音 for the intended word e.g. 良 you would very likely guessed it begins with letter L so you look for L at the top or bottom yellow row, then search along the vertical column reading each of all the words in that vertical column starting with letter L, either searching upwards from bottom or from top down doesn't matter.

As you read each of these letter L words, you will find that only 凉 is closest to 良 which is the intended word for your entry, and the table provided the 汉语拼音 as LIANG.

When you entered LIANG in your PC, multiple choices will appear for your selection including all the words that match LIANG. e.g. 亮 两 量 etc about a dozen of them, you will be able to pick out the intended word 良 without too much difficulty.



The table is organized in a grid of all Starting & Ending 声母/韵母 which means ALL the combination which pronounced ALL the existing Chinese words are covered. IN each of the vertical columns are the same Starting letters. In each of the horizontal rows lined up all the same ending letters.

The table can work both ways when you are in doubt for a certain 汉语拼音 meaning if you are unsure of either the starting or the ending part, you can either search horizontally or vertically and read out and compare words that shares similarities. You will be able to notice the patterns, and get your hints from the table.

The blank cells are the combinations that have no existing Chinese words matching, it simply means you need not be bordered about these combinations. When not entering any words you still can read this table for familiarization purpose, going horizontally as well as vertically, row by row, column by column. If you are familiar with it, then your next use of it will be faster.

I tried to use it to help many 1st timers and they could enter a paragraph of Chinese by themselves at the 1st time relying on this table spending much lesser time than their previous hard struggling times.

However if you are unable to pronounce the intended word at all, then you won't be able to have too much luck unless the exact match happened to be found there. It would be frustrating to count on 汉语拼音 totally if you are unable to pronounce accurately because that caused you to lookup under the wrong column or pick the wrong answers out of the correct column. For these situations you have to learn from mistakes.:(

Here's a tip for printing:-

1) It prints out nicely in 3 pages in landscape mode.

2) After printing, use gum or scotch tape to join the 3 pages.

If you want to go to a printing shop say at Selegie Complex and spent may be $2 they can print on A2 or A1 posters using their big HP inkject ploters. I am wondering if I should include the lookup instructions posted here into the table's HTML at bottom.

Many such users like you mentioned had resorted to buy Chinese writing pads that mostly only work in Windows. So far I found only one high-class brand (wacom 华康) that will work in e.g. Kubuntu 9.10 only the hardware works and their writing recognition software only runs in windoze :( so the only way to use is to run virtualized windoze again, which I recommend years ago but now abandoning since Linux can directly do 99% of things without calling for virtualized windoze.

This writing pad is the LAST crucial thing that held use of virtualized windoze. I am using 汉语拼音 to kill it off.

Buying these writing pads cost hundreds of bugs and they will work only in specific PCs setup for it. This solution is non-generic. Only 汉语拼音 is generic enough, that you can use it freely on most computers. You are therefore not stuck to a particular PC due to this silly handwriting pad.
