I mean your mind, since your friend = you

It is indeed a good, productive & profitable venture, but one has to be smart, technologically inclined to see opportunities.

1. Schools often starts in the morning, & some if not most parents may not prepare a healthy breakfast for their kids or even any, & kids in their formative years will critically need full nourishment to begin the day, then at break times - recess, & some whom have to stay after school hours for ECA WILL need food. Without food, let alone healthy foods, their biological physical growth will be stymied.

2. Kids do not need the average grams of food that a full adult will need such as 75gms a serving at lunch. 40 to 50grams of healthy food per serving will be sufficient to keep them nourished, which means a canteen operator will not need a heavy capital for food resources, & thus with such savings, more earnings per plate served, so long as the costs of such foods are kept reasonable & affordable to ALL kids.

Our Education Minister had listened to the woes of school canteen operators, whom may had high expectations such as Hawker Center operators whom earned big bucks & felt left out, despite fact & evidences of low rents for school canteen & EXCLISIVE clientele - 100s of kids per school for every meal...

Thus, he & his team are considering a CENTRAL KITCHEN concept, managed by one contractor per school, to keep our kids fed.

3a) Following such a concept, it is possible, with TECHNOLOGY, such as long prepared microwavable food of any & every ethnicity- cautiously TEST MARKETED to research on Market DEMAND to prevent wastage - placed into fridges & then into multiple microwave ovens to keep hot & fresh during the early mornings for kids, recess, lunch, etc. It only takes a few minutes for the food to be served, more so when food intake schedules are made available to the central kitchen contractor to prepare in advance for their clienteles.

4. Being the SOLE contractor, with hundreds of kids, & each pays just a mere $2/meal, it would mean a gross profit of $200/day or $4,800/mth for just ONE meal over a 6day school week.

With breakfast, recess, lunch & other meals per day, the gross profits would be.......

...such are only the main course of a meal, so consider too the drinks, appetizers, fruits, to make a healthy nourishing meal from a SOLE contractor..?

5. So start planning now if your friend is serious for a life changing event. Work up a pragmatic & realistic concept model on a cautious small scale first but scalable to bigger opportunities should the plan be successful, to apply for the job.

If finances are an issue, use the biz model to seek for funds, beginning with one's relations & close friends for such help as they will know one better than
banks or others for trust to be gained...

But need at least 2 manpower. If not tired.

1. Based upon data
a) there are 180 active primary schools in Singapore
b)average birth rate in Singapore is 32,000/yr.
c)average students in Primary one = 32,000 kids / 180 schools = 177 students in Primary one.
d) Primary school is from primary one to six = 177 students X 6 levels = estimated 1062 students in one school.

2. If you friend is not ambitious but laid back, then he can try to sell 2 menus & a drink within one stall - Fish ball noodle & Chinese nasi lemak. Such food are easy to prepare as they come in frozen ready prepared pack. One just need to work on boiling the soup with condiments & ENSURE it is tasty & not just salty. It must be for the specialty that one aspires than just in it for easy money to fool others, in order to be successful & have repeat customers.

For nasi lemak, it is just boiling rice, prepare the chilli paste & frying chicken wings. And for drinks, one only needs to buy industrial prepared jerry can type of fresh prepared orange juice - just pour it into cups & sell to customers.

Such capital outlays are small, if one is resourceful to seek out wholesalers for better pricing & discounts based on regular purchasing orders.

3. In order to be successful, hardwork is the only way. There are no shortcuts in life. When one works smart & hard, rewards come....

a)
With est 1000 students in one school & your friend operates on stall with good & cheap nutritious food, there are NO other competitors in the school as each school will attempt to diversify food types served.

b) Just an average 500 students buying your food for one meal per day sold at $2 will work out to gross profit $1000/day or $24,000/mth on 6 day school week/mth. Anything else will be a bonus.

c) Some canteen operators failed & had to close. The reasons vary - from bigger opportunities elsewhere to had been serving lousy food that its customers gave up.

Actually, there are many ways to resolve the issue of empty canteen stalls in schools.

Ultimately, the aim is to ensure that no growing kid will go hungry while at school & it's activities...

Should Singaporeans shun such opportunities due to lack of vision or foresight, then our govt can take control - make the canteen operator a public employee with a $4000 salary/month, with KPI index, & the nett profits goes to our National Treasury for social expenditures...

Such is only one...there are others, which may not be palatable, as our strong dollar will attract others, whom are more hungry, visionary & ambitious but with lower dollar exchange rate than ours, to seize opportunities here..

For a stall at coffeeshop, I suppose capital need about 6 digit. In school, is 5 digit enough

24000 a month. Let's say pub bill 200. Raw material 6000. Rental 5.I still earn 5 digit a month. That's comfortable enough right?

But being a hawker not easy. Physical demanding. Many stall close outside due to rental. I wonder why they don't apply be school hawker since rental 5 a month only.

To be honest & rather brutally frank, to the point of even seemingly insulting...sadly, not many who ventured into this trade but an honest livelihood, they are not very well educated, & have only flawed Human emotions in them.

Misery loves company. Just because one who failed & tells others their own failures BUT doused with personal justifications which often rely on blaming others, does not mean another would fail, if that one is creative, innovative & intelligent enough to seize opportunities not based on fantasies, tales from others, etc.

NOTHING that is WORTHWHILE & HONEST comes easy - from technical or academia. Success can only come from dedication, attention to details,& much, much more.....

Wonder all you wish....Truths & Realities stand on its own pedestal. Tell your friend to do his own research, or find agencies that would help, than to rely on tales from failures....

What sole contractor are you talking about? The post is asking about renting one food stall. You are competing against at least more than 5 stalls in the canteen. Your pricing will be guided by the school. You can’t anyhow raise prices even when your ingredients cost goes up.
