Some of my former classmates from secondary school, JC and NUS have met the same fate - retrenchment in their 50s. Finding an equally high paying job is almost impossible so they turn to driving a PHV so that they may keep their much prized luxury cars.

Imagine that you are a retrenched former CEO who is forced to paste a PHV decal on the BMW 7 series that you paid for with your hard earned money. The public will believe that you are a low SES driver leasing that luxury car to make ends meet.

Life not easy nowadays
My parents had the same job from graduation till retirement. They were S'pore University grads on salaried jobs, who could afford a semi-detached and terrace houses in District 10 in the late 1960s and early 70s.

  • S'pore's car ownership rate is only less than 11%. In the U.S., it is nearly 80% and it is just under 50% in Europe.
  • Despite the govt's policies to reduce the number of cars, there are around 600,000 private cars and PHVs.
  • Roads take up 12% of S'pore's total land area, which is a far higher % than in many larger countries.
  • A new compact car costs more than $120,000 in S'pore. The same car would cost about $30,000 in the UK and U.S.
  • The average age of cars in S'pore has steadily declined in the last 5 years and is now 5.6 years old. The average age of cars is 12 years in the U.S., 10 in Australia, 8.8 years in Japan and 11.5 in Europe.
