I don't vote for the boss I vote for myself, so opposition will still be my choice regardless whether my boss is good or bad.

As a boss, I have no choice but to vote for the PAP in order to defend my desire for the preservation of the status quo.

I can't imagine being forced to hire expensive, useless sinkies when there are cheaper, better and faster foreigners available.

SINGAPORE: The Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA) celebrated its 80th anniversary with a fund-raising dinner on Friday evening at the Shangri-La.

Over S$700,000 was raised with proceeds going towards the Association's national youth development programmes.

The Guest of Honour at the dinner was Ms Ho Ching, Executive Director and CEO of Temasek Holdings.

To commemorate their 80th anniversary this year, a slew of activities and events are also being planned. This includes a Fun Table Tennis Event together with the People's Association on August 20 at Suntec City.

The Association will also host the Volkswagen Women's World Cup in October where the world's top 16 female players will be playing.

Lee Bee Wah, President of the STTA, said: "STTA has been looking for funding since two years ago because we put in place a series of programmes, from the pre-school programme, to the youth programme and as well as overseas tournaments for our national team and now that we have our young players like Isabelle and Clarence so we need actually quite a lot of funding.

"We also have a youth development fund, endowment fund. The funding that we need mainly comes from (the) SSC. SSC gives us about 50 per cent of the funding that we require so certainly we (need to) work very hard to get the other half."

I have to preserve my profit margin. Being forced to employ sinkies will make it harder for me to make my millions.

Sam is partly right. Businessmen will only care about their profits and all, they don't care about whether their own countrymen gets employed. Not everybody is like the French, Japanese and Koreans, who takes care of their own kind.

French, Japanese and Korean businessmen would hire cheaper foreigners any time. It's just that over there, their governments wouldn't allow so many in.

True. But some are concerned over racial purity. They might hire cheaper low-ranked foreigners but the managing and higher positions is strictly locals. Foreigners can find jobs but always tuck at a glass ceiling unless he starts learning the language.

France, Korea and Japan are homogeneous nations. It's citizens actually feel of sense of belonging and camaraderie and they'll help each other out because they know they're all part of the same clan with a common culture, language and roots.

Singapore isn't like that. It's run like a company and one with a cut-throat culture to boot. It's every man for himself in Singapore Inc. No sinkie really cares about his fellow countrymen, especially when "caring" carries a financial cost.

If I was running a company in Singapore and could decrease my wage bill by a whopping 40% simply by hiring foreigners, give me one good reason why I should sacrifice the profit to hire sinkies instead?

Would the sinkies appreciate my gesture? Would they be more loyal to me (as a fellow sinkie) and stay on even if a foreigner offered them a 30% increment if they jumped ship? No prizes for guessing the obvious answers.

Not to mention, Japanese and Korean employees seldom jump ship to another high-paying company. Most of them stick to their first company for at least 10 years.

Homogeneous is just one of the key factor. Government policy is also another.

As a man who had traveled and lived in OZ, I am sure you know the Australian whites take care of their own whites as well. Most companies still prefer employing fellow Australians. Migrants can work but there is always a glass ceiling to prevent them from having a senior role. Australia is no homogeneous nation, but because of the government that priortizes taking care of the welfare of its own citizens over GDP growth, Australians feel a sense of belonging too. The 'mate' spirit is still strong among local Aussies.

I have to agree that Singaporeans young uns jump ship hell lot. Most will just last one year in a company before jumping again.

OZ may not be as homogeneous as Korea/Japan but the majority are bound together by shared interests such as league, OZ rules, cricket and getting smashed.

It's more of a nation, albeit a young one, than singapore will ever be.

My point exactly. Once you carry the Australian passport, you are considered one of them, regardless of race so long you blend in.

It is really a chicken first or the egg first question.
I disagree with the argument that sporeans are perpetual job hoppers who only go for higher salary.
This is unfounded generalisation.
I have seen a fair share of foreigners and PRs in spore who job hop constantly too.
People left the company for a variety of reasons.
As long as it is not a mass resignation, each individual who left has their own reason.
Furthermore, nowadays companies don't value loyalty as much as the worth of an employee to the company.
I have seen employees who resigned from company A, went to work for company B for a few months, and then to company C for a year,
after that went back to company A again. The boss of company A still hire them, even though they have left the company before.
The difference is that now, this employee has joined the company with additional skill sets and experience that he may never have acquired should
he still stay at this company A.
