MUMBAI - THE gunmen who attacked Mumbai killing at least 195 people wanted to go down in history for an Indian 9/11, and were also inspired by the bombing of the Marriott hotel in Islamabad, media reports said.

They had planned every detail, knew the layout of the Taj Mahal and Trident Oberoi hotels they targeted, had commando-style training and even had snacks such as dry fruit stuffed in their backpacks.

The capture of one of the militants, a clean-shaven, fluent English-speaking 21-year-old from Pakistan according to reports, has highlighted the ambitious plans of the Islamist group.

'They wanted to reduce the symbols of economic strength to rubble, the Taj and Trident, so they cannot be rebuilt,' Times Now said. 'They talked of a 9/11 to bring down the buildings.'

Their methods were different but the impact was huge.

The Oberoi and the Taj are the two hotels that businessmen and professionals stayed whilst in Mumbai.

By attacking these two, the terrorists had an effective market on those who contributed largely to Mumbai's vibrant sectors.

The hotel rooms, especially those in the Taj are absolutely beautiful. The Taj is the hotel of choice for the Arab Sheikhs during the monsoon season. At one time, the Taj was the place where the SIA girls stayed in.

The suites in Oberoi are really huge and opulently decorated, with interconnecting doors, lavish areas for entertaining.

But will India retailiate the same way as the Israelis will?

I have my doubts.

These muslim fanatics are ideological in nature. You will need to fight violence with violence and India may not have that sort of commitment. Neither does India have that sort of unity amongst their citizens.

Pakistan may be muslim and India may be hindu, but both are Indians.

Will India command the same support as the USA as in 911? India's currency is not the world's currency. Their foreign aid schemes cannot be compared to that of the USA. Their companies, though amongst the world's biggest, do not have the same sort of impact. And their army, navy and airforce reach are not global.

India should just settle their differences with Pakistan.

But it is unlikely to happen with real impact as some elements of the Pakistani Government had been allegedly sympathetic to these fanatics.
