Mum throws baby from hospital window

Published Oct 28 2010

A woman who gave birth prematurely to twins - a girl and a boy - has been arrested in Mumbai, India for allegedly throwing one of them from a hospital window. Police said the woman, identified as Deepika Parmar, 26, threw the baby girl from a ground floor bathroom window of a state-run hospital in central Mumbai early Tuesday morning.

Deepika Parma reportedly threw her baby out of a toilet window

The baby was found but had suffered head injuries and part of her ehad was gnawed away by rats. She died in hospital later. Deepika initially claimed that the baby had been stolen but security camera footage showed her going into the toilet with the baby and returning empty-handed. Police detained her on suspicion of abandoning a child.

She might be charged with a more serious offence, such as murder pending psychiatrict examination to determine her mental condition.
According to media reports, the twins were born prematurely at seven and a half months and had been underweight before their transfer to the hospital earlier this month.

Human rights groups have long expressed concern about sex-selective abortion - terminating a pregnancy on the basis of a child's gender - and infanticide of baby girls in India, particularly in rural areas. A preference for boys has emerged in part due to the key role that sons play in Hindu funeral ceremonies.

Other factors include substantial dowry gifts that a father provides for his daughter's new family at her wedding, and the fact that sons are often seen as breadwinners and daughters as financial burdens. But the woman's husband Manish Parmar, 30, a tailor, told PTI: "We were happy with the twins. We did not have any problem with the baby girl."
