BATU PAHAT: A mother and her child were killed when a fire broke out at their home in Ayer Hitam. The bodies of Lenny Mariyana Daud, 29, and Nor Sabihah Qasreena Mohd Nisam, three, were found in an embrace on a bed. Seven other family members in the house escaped unhurt. Batu Pahat OCPD Asst Comm Ibrahim Aris said yesterday that the fire at Kampung Parit Lapis Sri Paya Darat broke out at 1am.
He said Lenny’s mother heard her screams when the fire broke out. “The flames quickly engulfed Lenny’s room and spread to other parts of the wooden house. It only took a few minutes for the fire to raze the building,” said ACP Ibrahim. He said that police have ruled out foul play as initial investigations showed that the fire was caused by a short circuit in the victims’ room. The damage to the house was estimated to be about RM85,000.
