COOS Pastor Shawn Tay rallying troops to support new exco at EGM in the name of “Singapore”

From Wayang Party:
Pastor Shawn Tay who is a staff of Church of Our Savior (COOS) under the “Choices Ministry” (source COOS) has written an email to his friends imploring them to turn up en masse at AWARE’s EGM on 2 May 2009 to support the new exco.
Here’s an excerpt of his email which you can read in full here:
“The pro-gay old guards are retaliating by calling for an Extraordinary General Meeting where they intend to amend the Constitution to only allow members who have been with AWARE for more than 2 years, to vote. If this change is passed, then only the pro-gay old guards and their cohorts will have the power to do what they want.
To prevent this from happening, we are calling on all responsible females to sign up for membership with AWARE immediately, and also to attend this all-important EGM so as to vote against changing the Constitution. If you are male and have received this petition, please pass it to as many responsible females as you know and encourage them to sign up for membership with AWARE so as to vote against any changes to their Constitution.”
He signed with the following exhortation:
Singapore is counting on you. Please respond.”
It is both disingenuous and irresponsible of Mr Tay to use the name of Singapore to further the agenda of his Church.
We were outraged that Mr Tay had thrown unfounded allegations against the AWARE old guards that they were “pro-gay” without substantiating them.
From our understanding, AWARE was never pro-gay. It is pro-choice. Singaporeans should be given the freedom to make an informed choice. No groups should be allowed to impose their values and beliefs on others.
Mr Tay’s Church had stated its strong stance against homosexuality on its website here. We respect its right to do so as everybody is entitled to their own opinions, but we should agree to disagree and tolerate differing views without infringing on the rights to others to hold beliefs contrarian to ours.
We sincerely implore COOS not to drag the name of Singapore into its slug fest with the AWARE old guards. This is purely an internal matter which should be settled behind closed doors.
