M'sians cross Causeway daily on hire expectations
Woodlands on weekday mornings is a hive of wheeling and dealing in illegal workers
By Zaihan Mohamed Yusof and Chai Hung Yin

July 04, 2010

On the surface, the morning scene at Woodlands Centre seems innocent.

But look closer, spend more time in the mornings there and a pattern emerges – an illicit trade in cheap and illegal workers.

Dig deeper and you'll notice that the groups are organised into skill sets. Plumbers gather at one corner, plasterers at another.

Every half hour or so, a truck meanders into the Woodlands Centre carpark. A man approaches the workers. A firm handshake and a deal is struck.

The workers have landed a job. Each worker will pocket about $80 for the day’s work.

Woodlands Centre is a marketplace for manpower.

The illegal workers are from Malaysia and arrive in Woodlands on social visit passes. Most rent rooms in Johor Baru and wait around Woodlands daily for work.

Some claim to have done it for years.

While the trade may seem harmless, both workers and employers risk stiff penalties of fines and jail terms. And should anything happen to the workers, such as being hurt on the job, they will have to deal with it themselves.

Already so many creative social visit peoples hanging around to dig gold in SG, what is the problem with another few more M'sian ?
Nothing much you can do with these social visit people who have no money if they are caught but garment can FINE THE LOCAL CONTRACTORS if they get caught .

The authorities know about this, nothing is new...they just close one eye....one wooden will tell you, "no illegal Malaysian artisans, I worry"... ha ha ha ha

The contsruction industry here needs these people...who else can lay tiles, built cupboards, install false ceilings etc..

Agree. Gov. close one eye. If not for these manpower. Many/almost all small/medium local contractor will go bankrupt.
Many small and medium cannot hire FT work permit because of the rules and also they need flexible manpower. Because not everytime they have a job/contract.
Boss also a labour they need to hand on also in reality.

As if we are so naive not know about this? many of us who renovate our flats, houses etc..will noticed the bricklayers, the tile layers the whatever, will turn up for work in their Johor Baru vans..usually the "vanette" type or on motorcyles bearing "J', or "N" or "M: plates..

surely our ICA knows anout this...they see them daily!!..with their equipments in their vehicles..of course now we have a lot of MPV's with "W" plates..in which the ICA officers will smile & salute at them, for they are bringing money to the CAsinOES, in return will pay ofr their bonuses... ha ha ha ha

the others would be women, who work in the numerous small industries in Woodlands, Senoko, Marsiling, Sembawang...or elsewhere

before the China mei mei invasion, some in the massage parlours, the KTV's...geylang etc..

what's new?? meoooooooow!!
