East Or West; What Works Is Best
by Khaw Boon Wan
Several readers have emailed me to ask about my "frozen shoulder" after the tui-na treatment yesterday. Thank you for your concern.
He is a qualified TCM physician specialising in tui-na and is very professional. He diagnosed the problem as "winter chill" coupled with "tired spinal region" and proceeded to give me a one-hour tui-na session. It was rather painful but he said that it was necessary for the treatment to work. At the end of the one hour, I could regain about half of my normal functions and was confident enough with his treatment to arrange for a second session at night.
He came and this time round, also got to work on my back and taught me a few exercises. He said that I should continue a few more sessions of tui-na in Singapore, to complete the treatment and I intend to do so.
Meanwhile, I felt much better already and am able to lift my right arm high enough to comb hair and put on a shirt properly. I left Shanghai after lunch and have just reached home. Catching up on emails etc.
In Singapore, TCM complements western medicine and this mixed system is best for consumers. The two operates on very different philosophy and it is hard and unfair to assess one using the other's benchmark.
For patients, whether it is east or west, so long as it works, it is the best!
