JOHOR BARU: A single mum who left Penang to begin a new life here, left her son at an apartment while she went to Singapore for a job interview.
She had been gone for just 30 minutes Monday morning when she received the heart-wrenching call - her four-year-old son had fallen to his death.
A. Sanjiv, who had been sleeping when his mother left him, was believed to have fallen off the balcony from their eighth-floor unit of the Taman Larkin Idaman apartment.
Losing her son was a major blow to S. Sarasvati, 29, who had lost her husband in an accident four years ago. She was believed to have just moved here to start life afresh.
The mother and son had just moved into the apartment from Penang four days ago together with a 26-year-old male relative.
"They were renting the apartment," said Johor Baru (South) OCPD Asst Comm Zainuddin Yaakob.
He said the mother had asked the relative to send her to the Larkin bus terminal at around 6.30am. The toddler was asleep when they left the apartment. They locked the door.
"The relative then came back to the apartment to find the boy missing. When he checked the balcony, he saw the boy on the ground below," he said.
A close family friend, James Pillay, said it was tragic for Sarasvati, who had lost her husband in an accident in Seremban.
"I believe she was here to start a new life," he said. adding that the woman from Alor Setar did not have any close relatives in the state.
ACP Zainuddin said the case would be investigated under Section 33 of the Child Act, which states it is an offence to leave a child without reasonable supervision.
The offence carries a fine of RM5,000 or imprisonment not exceeding two years.
