PUTRAJAYA: Four more civil servants were arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission on suspicion of being involved in sand-smuggling activities.
Three of them were nabbed in Pahang and the other in Johor, bringing the total number of suspects arrested in the operation to 38.
MACC officers yesterday produced 29 suspects at magistrate's courts in various parts of the country where they obtained remand orders of between four and seven days, to facilitate investigations. The other nine were released after they were questioned.
More arrests are expected in the next few days as MACC intensifies its operations on those who facilitated sand-smuggling activities for sexual favours and cash.
Only three of those remanded yesterday were represented by lawyers.
Imran Hadzalie Abdul Hamid, lawyer of one of the suspects, a political aide to a Selangor executive councillor, hoped MACC would release his client soon as he had asthma and diabetes complications.
"We raised an objection to the magistrate as the MACC Act itself provided for suspects to go to the MACC office every day to facilitate investigations. Everyone is aware that there should be no interrogation after 5.30pm," he said.
Among those nabbed were two political aides, 28 civil servants including department heads and enforcement officers, and those from the private sector from Pahang, Johor, Perak, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. MACC officers also seized a total of RM50,000 from the suspects.
Investigations has revealed that several suspects received between RM500 and RM50,00 in bribes from the sand smuggling syndicate.
Deputy MACC chief Datuk Shukri Abdull also did not rule out the possibility of arresting more senior civil servants in days to come.
Meanwhile, it was learnt that among the six arrested in Johor on Tuesday four were Customs officers, one from the Land Office and one from the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry.
Five were nabbed here while one was arrested in Kota Tinggi.
A source revealed that two of them had asked for sexual favours apart from cash. Two of the suspects are senior government officers who had been serving for more than 20 years.
The suspects who were between the ages of 30 and 50, had received between RM500 and RM3,000 in bribes.
