AN MP on Tuesday called for a temporary suspension of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on essential items and a cut in rate to boost consumer spending and help shops, restaurants and the service industry to survive.

Mr Michael Palmer, MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, said the GST is seen as an additional burden by many Singaporeans and adds to their daily cost of living.

While the GST credits for each household will be doubled this year, he said the lower-income families will receive more to help them cope with likely reduction in earnings.

His points can be made known, but not carried out. It is up to LHL or LKY to say yes or no. Afterall, where they going to get more $$$ to cover up their debts.

GST is to help the poor. Cutting GST at this time is like rubbing salt into the wound of the poor. The poor will suffer more if GST is cut.

If increasing GST helps the poor, does reducing personal income tax, punish the rich?

If the answer is yes, I suggest, lets help the rich by increasing personal income tax and punish the poor by reducing GST
