SINGAPORE: Member of Parliament for Tampines GRC Baey Yam Keng said on Thursday he will be taking on a more senior advisory role in the PR company Hill & Knowlton Strategies from 1 December.

Confirming this with Channel NewsAsia, he said this will allow him to spend more time with his constituents and also with his family.

As a senior advisor at Hill & Knowlton, Mr Baey said he will be involved in client contacts but would not be involved in the business management and day-to-day operations of the company.

Mr Baey is the latest MP who has decided to devote more time to his constituency work after the recent announcement by MP Foo Mee Har to do likewise.

I've got nothing against money. I'd like to have money myself! I'd like to
have a house and a garden and dogs and a car and a chauffeur but, look,
I've got a flat. I've got a swimming pool attached to the flat. I've not
even got a car but I use taxis. I have a dignified way of life without
being wealthy.

I don't see the necessity of owning a Mercedes-Benz and a swimming pool
and a couple of mistresses. I think we've got our values all wrong.
You know $96,000 a month for a Prime Minister and $60,000 a month for a
minister. What the hell do you do with all that money? You can't eat it!
What do you do with it? Your children don't need all that money.

My children have had the best of education. In fact, I'm very proud of
them. One of them is a senior registrar to two major hospitals in Oxford.
Another of them is a consultant in European law to the Securities and
Investment Board in the United Kingdom. They've had their education. There
are no complaints.

I never earned $60,000 a month or $90,000 a month. When I was Chief
Minister, I earned $8,000 a month.

Look, what is happening today is we are encouraged to and are becoming
worshippers of the Golden Calf.

We have lost sight of the joy and excitement of public service, helping
our fellow men. The joy and excitement of seeking and understanding of the
joy of the miracle of the living the duty and the grandeur. We have lost
taste for heroic action in the service of our people.

We have become good bourgeois seeking comfort, security. It's like seeking
a crystal coffin and being fed by intravenous injections through pipes in
the crystal coffin; crystal coffins stuck with certificates of your
pragmatic abilities.

SINGAPORE - Tampines Member of Parliament (MP) Baey Yam Keng has become the second MP in the past week to step down from a full-time corporate role to devote more time to constituency work.

He is now a senior advisor at Hill+Knowlton Strategies, after leaving the post of managing director of the public relations firm at the start of this month.

Mr Baey who was contacted last night said the new role would require only 20 per cent of the time he previously spent at work.

Earlier this week, West Coast MP Foo Mee Har stepped down from her executive position at Standard Chartered Bank in favour of a non-executive role.

Mr Baey said the move means a cut in his total income of over 50 per cent; he had wanted to resign from the company, but was persuaded to stay on in a different capacity by his boss.

He said he now has more time for residents and estate issues, and can contribute more actively to parliamentary debates.

But he noted that some MPs successfully balance career and public demands.

Mr Baey added that the public should not put pressure on MPs to devote themselves fully to constituency work. NEO CHAI CHIN

Maybe they need him to work full time with MIWs' Janandas Nair to start plotting for 2016.

Doubt so. Probably the firm was counting on baey to bring in a lot more govt business, but that did not pan out. So they decided to cut him loose.

timing of all these resignations suggests to me something not right,or big plans of grandeur in the pipeline
