<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->Thousands turned up at the Home Team's recruitment fair at VivoCity yesterday, with some streaming in half an hour before its opening time of 10am.
Most, in their early 20s, were looking for work because they were unemployed or feared being retrenched.
Among the early birds was Ms Kayatheri Kanapathi, 27, who was retrenched from her job as an operations coordinator last month.
Earlier this month, she signed up for an eight-day training course offered by the Employment and Employability Institute (e2i), an initiative of the National Trades Union Congress.
E2i had suggested she apply for a job with the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA).
Mr Muhammad Riduwan Ali, 23, who accompanied his fiancee to the fair, said she was looking for a job with the ICA.
'She is currently working in the food and beverage sector and is expecting to be retrenched soon,' he said.
Mr Muhammad Riduwan, who is doing his national service, added that he might sign on as a regular when his service ends, if the economy is still bad.
The Home Team has 1,050 job openings in the Singapore Civil Defence Force, Singapore Prison Service, Singapore Police Force, Central Narcotics Bureau, ICA and the Internal Security Department.
Speaking at the event, Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Education and Home Affairs, noted that there was a demand for men and women on the ground.
Singapore will be hosting mega events such as the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum and the Youth Olympics, which will see big crowds, he said.
'These and the new security threats that Singapore and other countries face mean that we have to increase the force we have,' he said.
The Ministry of Home Affairs said that it received 1,080 job applications yesterday.
The fair continues today at the South Court of VivoCity and is open from 10am to 7pm. [email protected]
