<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->THE Geylang Serai Temporary Market has a problem: Rats.
Cleaners and pest controllers have caught 41 rats there since last Friday, the second such intensive hunt this year.

(3:41)
</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><!-- Background Story --></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>The first came in February, when the National Environment Agency (NEA) was told of the rat infestation problem.
The market's management committee did a sweep then, with pest controllers laying out rat bait and glue boards.
But these initial measures failed to wipe out the rodent menace, and measures were stepped up.
However, it appears that the problem has not been licked, despite the two rat hunts.
Yesterday, as a spring cleaning took place, rats were spotted just outside the hawker centre.
There are 83 hawker stalls in the temporary food centre, which adjoins a wet market - where the rat infestation appears to be concentrated.
Most of the 41 rats trapped since last Friday were caught there.
Yesterday, the NEA said it has been monitoring the situation, and has advised the temporary market's managing committee to intensify its pest control measures.
The agency also conducts regular inspections of individual hawker stalls.
The rat problem is a bane for stallholders.
Said Mr Fadullah Sudi, 44, who runs a vegetable stall with his wife: 'You can always see them at night, they chase each other like Tom and Jerry.
'They are very big and not scared of people,' he added.
Mr Fadullah said the problem had been there since he first moved into the new premises in March 2006.
His eldest son Faizul, 20, who helps out at the stall during the school holidays, added: 'No matter how much we clean, there are always rats.'
The stallholders also said that because there are no table cleaners working after 7pm, plates with leftover food are left piled high at the food centre overnight, providing the rats with a ready supply of food.
There is another animal-related woe at the market: Bird faeces.
Birds are known to throng the market at lunchtime, leaving a trail of droppings on the floor, on stallholders' foodstuff and sometimes, even landing on customers' food.
The hygiene problems have become so bad that some stallholders cannot wait to move out.
Their permanent home, a new double-storey building along Changi Road, is set to open towards the end of the year. Ms Siti Hasnah Mohd Arshad, 52, who runs a stall selling traditional Malay cakes and desserts, said: 'I hope the newly renovated market will have better facilities and a better system of cleanliness established.'

Who is Tan Yong Soon?

<DD>Chef Tan Yong Soon <DD> <DD>Update: Tan Yong Soon has been reprimanded by his boss, minister in charge of the civil service, Teo Chee Hean for his insensitivity. You can read more about it HERE. </DD></DL>Via Wayang Party. Mr Tan Yong Soon is the current Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources. He is a SAF Overseas Scholar from the batch of 1974 and had previously served as the CEO of the URA Board; Deputy Secretary (Policy) in Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Defence; as well as Principal Private Secretary to the Prime Minister. An extremely impressive resume.
Recently, Mr Tan has drawn public controversy for a seemingly innocuous travelogue he wrote about his family holiday to Paris to learn cooking French cuisine from the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu. The travelogue was published in The Straits Times, Life section on 6 December 2008.
The main issue of contention with his article: The 3 week lesson costs S$15,500 per head and in total, S$46,500 for Mr Tan, his wife and son, not including air tickets and living expenses in France. In addition, Mr Tan had taken 5 weeks work leave for the trip.
To some Singaporean netizens who were quick to criticise Mr Tan on blogs and online forums; Mr Tan’s actions were seen as over-indulgent and insensitive for a senior civil servant to “show-off” his pay and extravagant lifestyle in light of the current economic recession and the government asking the people to brace for tough times ahead.
On the other hand, there are also netizens who stood by Mr Tan, rationalising that he was just spending his own money, earned through honest means.
Either way, Mr Tan may have expected some level of public exposure for having his story run in the national newspaper, but I am not so sure if he had anticipated such strong reactions.
In all fairness, I do not see anything intrinsically wrong with Mr Tan’s action (showiness aside). The whole incident just reflects how polarised online discourse has become in Singapore; with anyone deemed somewhat as an “elite”, immediately vilified and condemned for eternity.

<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->CHILDCARE centres and kindergartens are stepping up the cleaning of classrooms as the number of children coming down with hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) continues to climb.
Last week, 653 people came down with the normally mild childhood disease that usually causes fever and rashes.
That is just 12 short of the Health Ministry's official 'epidemic level'.
Seven children had to be hospitalised last week; this is not out of the ordinary and in most cases, they recover within a week.
HFMD is a common childhood ailment that causes ulcers, rashes and blisters on the hands, feet and buttocks.
Affecting mainly children aged 10 years and younger, it is spread through bodily fluids, which is why it can be passed quickly among young children who share toys that they may have put into their mouths.
For now, no childcare centres have been ordered to close, as the cases are spread out rather than clustered in any one particular area.
However, the number of cases is likely to rise between this month and next, one of two traditional peaks for HFMD, with the other being August to October.
There were 4,926 cases in the first 13 weeks of the year, compared to 4,423 for the same period last year.
A Ministry of Health (MOH) spokesman told The Straits Times that the predominant strain now is still the enterovirus 71 (EV71) that can potentially develop into a deadly form of the disease.
Last year, the EV71 caused four children to develop encephalitis, or inflammation of the brain lining, and a three-year- old boy died as a result. In a severe outbreak between 2000 and 2001, seven children were killed by the virus.
In Singapore, there have been no reported cases of EV71-associated encephalitis so far this year or of any deaths from the disease, said the ministry.
But the virus is active in the region. In China, 33 children have died from HFMD this year in the crowded central Henan and eastern Shandong provinces.
Meanwhile, local childcare centres and kindergartens The Straits Times spoke to are taking precautions.
The Church of the Holy Trinity Kindergarten in Tampines is spending an extra $400 to clean its premises every quarter.
Principal Shirley Tan said the kindergarten is sanitised and thoroughly cleaned before every session to avoid a repeat of last year's incident, when the centre had to shut for 10 days. She added that children have been drilled into a routine of heading straight to the toilet to wash up and clean their hands with a sanitiser before classes and meals.
'Prevention is always better than cure, so we have stepped up checks,' she said.
At the larger chains, like My First Skool and the PAP Community Foundation (PCF), the usual health screening and cleaning measures are in place.
Children with fever, spots and ulcers are sent home and their parents are told to take them to a doctor.
Ms Ruth Low, chief executive of the PCF, which runs over 250 kindergartens and 30 childcare centres, said there are currently 32 children down with HFMD spread over all her centres, although eight are clustered in the Woodlands area. Two weeks ago, it was fewer than 20.
'But I don't see anything alarming yet that triggers me to have sleepless nights,' she said, adding that she will continue to monitor the situation and inform parents whenever necessary.
Parents like Ms Devi Meyyappan, 30, said she might keep her three-year-old son at home if the nursery has an outbreak.
'I just don't want to take any chances', she said. [email protected]

Systemic failiure accelerating. Bacteria contamination was thought to be in the seafood. No news indicated the contaminant was from the facilities that affected the seafood. Cleaning the facilities is a PRC wayang show. Does not trace the cause of the seafood contamination. You hire 3rd rated people and pay them to rot their low abilities, you guarantee systemic failure. You know you are dealing with failure when you vote a silver spoon that cannot even crack a hardboiled egg.

Ya loh, some Sporeans - those who don't want to study and work hard but want to earn high pay - are so narrow-hearted that they expect civil servants to be simply that - a servant to them and earning a servant's pay.

They expect the civil servant to spend like a servant and cannot go for holiday to upgrade their skills or pursue their hobby - anything that is better than them.

People earning a million dollars and you expect them to live like an ordinary office worker - eat a three-dollar nasi lemak every day at hawker centre, take bus or MRT to work, go jogging around HDB estate and shop at wet market, and take a holiday in nearby Batam only. He might as well not slog in his study, tuang during NS and and take more MCs during work - and be happy as a pizza or burger despatch riders.

The Indian Rojak stall was given a what rating?...then who gives the overall food centre a rating?

You can't employ 'rodent's to catch rodents, you need a 'rat catcher'..what's his name, Fong?? ( anyway he had gone on)..you need KOJAK to solve the case of the TAinted Rojak!

Even the disease expert appeared on 10pm news say that the food poisoning is difficult to be caused by the rats.

Too bad the incident didn't happened while Condon Tan was away for his 5 weeks cooking lesson.
