SINGAPORE: Second Minister for Home Affairs K. Shanmugam says over 2,000 more private security officers will be needed over the next three years.
He adds that his ministry is also looking to hire more officers to meet its own manpower shortage.
Mr Shanmugam says the police will recruit another 250 officers this year. This will bring the total number of vacancies to be filled to 700.
Most of these officers will be deployed to Neighbourhood Police Centres.
As part of its recruitment efforts, the Home Affairs Ministry is carrying out various publicity and outreach campaigns targeting Singaporeans such as polytechnic students.
Mr K. Shanmugam said: "We are also working with MOF and external experts to determine the optimal level of resources for sustainable management of security demands.
"But, expectations have to be set right. Our police force is generally quite lean when compared to other developed countries and we have to bear that in mind." — CNA/de
