We need more credible opposition members, like Chiam and Low, to act as a wake-up call for the government not to take things for granted and always to put Singaporean interests first. More foreign aliens have been evading our country, or rather our city, and have been robbing us of our jobs, MRT seats, personal spaces, our homes (prices of HDB housing) and even our future spouses and security.

Because of their undesirable presence here, prices of our basic necessities have been shot up and the cultural atmosphere here has become intensely competitive. National identity and cohesion are unable to develop under such a landscape. This in turn would turn into a vicious cycle for the government to add in more and more foreigners, eroding our culture and well-being.

Although this FTs issue may seemingly be a single issue, it affects practically all aspects of our lives, particularly in getting a job and maintaining our jobs. Why should we continue to vote for the current government, when we ourselves are unable to feed ourselves?

DPM Wong has created a personal website recently after Chiam has announced that his team and he would be contesting in his constituency this coming election. However, DPM Wong's website which consists of his email contact, seems more like a "dummy" website. I have emailed him, highlighting my jobless state, pleaded him for assistance, but it has been ignored till now. There was not even a courtesy reply. Then why did he create a website with his contact email for?

We need more oppositions to put a "nib into the butt" of this government, to make them aware and act on our interests instead. We need more opposition to contest in constituencies that are constantly on "walkovers". We, the native people of Singapore, have to have access to our rights, at least to our jobs.

What do you say people?

Political Law,

I daresay most if not all brothers in this forum agree with the issues you cited and want to see a strong challenge to the perpetual rule of the PAP. If we cannot dislodge them, we must make it so clear that they cannot take us for granted anymore by putting up a strong Opposition in parliament, in civil society, in the media, press, and in every place the Party has dominated so far.

But the process begins with the populace at large, which mindset must be changed, to accept some effective changes to the way we lead or want to lead our lives from now on. Many people want change but are afraid of the unknown - what life or future under an Opposition govt or a weaker PAP will be. I can tell that the PAP, altho putting up a brave front, is now shivering in its pants, wondering what the backlash will be, how large, how bad. Under GCT's watch, he thought he had the ground sweet and the people drunken with good times and economic growth, but the loss of a seat to JBJ stung PAP to the marrow. So they are not as confident as before to predict landslide victories. The Opp camp must build on their strengths and exploit the PAP's chinks.

Let us show them that ours is not a blank check.

I am of the opinion that the PAP Government has performed sub-standard for the past 5 years. However will the opposition really do something about it?

A look at the wp.sg website find no readily specific reference to the foreign talent issue raised by political_law.

Did Chiam See Tong say anything about the foreign talent issue?

A dissatisfaction vote against the PAP is therefore the proposed strategy by the opposition-linked people. Those who do not express their dissatisfaction in this manner has a mindset problem.

However those who express their dissatisfaction will face problems of a different manner:

(a) will any of them use his power to put his wife in a lucrative position?

(b) will they continue to keep silent for the next 5 years?

(c) will they use their presence in Parliament to push for abolishment of the death penalty, fight for gay rights?

Sure the issues on voting patterns is complex but it is not so straightforward as saying that the problem lies with the gutlessness of pro-PAP voters. The sincerity of the opposition in contesting for their own personal benefit needs to be discerned. The creativeness of the opposition in using the election platform also is a matter of issue:

Someone has said that the vote for the opposition is to position for a reduction of PAP power. The theory is good. The practice shows the lie. Given that there is no possibility for the oppositions to gain power, the best is to turn the election into a 'referendum' of sorts. The best way is to contest in Ang Mo Kio whereby the percentage of votes serves this proxy purpose. Yet the prominent WP, usually tight-lipped about their election strategy, said upfront many months ago that they WILL NOT contest in AMK.

The impetus for the foreign talent policy is a good one to replace the insufficient replacement ratio. The implementation is mediocre and earlier, without regard to true singaporeans. Therefore a call for dissatisfaction votes is made. The issue now is will such dissatisfaction votes result in a change of opposition leaders' methods? Will it bring forth unwanted opposition involvement in Parliament or alignments within the opposition constituency that benefits their family members? These are issues that voters will need to make decisions on.
