Nestle to expand R&D presence in Singapore
SINGAPORE: Nestle said it is planning to progressively expand its research and development presence in Singapore with additional manpower, resources and investment.
The food and beverage company is currently conducting research with Singapore in the area of food and nutrition.
During his official visit to Switzerland, President Tony Tan Keng Yam toured the Nestle Research Centre in Lausanne on Friday to learn more about the research projects that are already underway.
The metabolic unit of the Nestle Research Centre provides laboratories for human studies -- in particular, it researches health problems such as obesity, diabetes and osteoporosis.
During his visit to the centre, President Tan was shown how energy expenditure is measured, as well as how the centre evaluates the impact of food and ingredients on human biology and health.
In January 2014, Nestle entered into a partnership with Singapore's Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) to strengthen its food and nutrition research and development.
The projects that will come out of the Nestle-A*STAR partnership will cover topics in the areas of food and science technology, nutrition, ingredients, packaged foods and biotransformation. The first of such projects will begin later this year.
Other than the focus on biotransformation, or the process of transforming raw materials into nutritious ingredients, Nestle is also looking to Singapore for help in analysing large sets of data to help its future business decisions.
Valerio Nannini, senior vice president and head of strategies and performance at Nestle, said: "We have a lot of interest to explore that big data information and collaborate with the government in Singapore in terms of being able to get the necessary data analytics out of it.
"(Data) that can be used for the industry and to understand better the consumers and many other things that we aren't able to analyse in a short amount of time."
In addition to food and nutrition R&D, Nestle Singapore also offers industrial attachments to students to provide them with mentorship and skills development opportunities.
