How does the law protect employers?') and wish to relate my experience which also illustrates how maids disadvantage employers by exploiting the use of police reports.
My maid showed signs of self-inflicted distress and we sympathised with her. She was underweight and ignored our appeal to eat more, replying that her husband left her because she was overweight. Each morning, she told us she wanted to go to Serangoon Road to look for her 'husband'.
Despite our attempts to accommodate her, she subsequently asked for a transfer and we willingly took her to the agent. But no employer wanted to hire her and one weekend, she ran away.
Subsequently she telephoned me and asked to be repatriated. We agreed. Following the phone call, she sent a letter to my family, signing off as slain Pakistani leader 'Benazir Bhutto' and 'Princess Diana'.
We realised she had lodged a police report only when the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) called and told my entire family to report for an investigation.
The maid had alleged that we had assaulted her. After two sessions, an ever-professional MOM dropped the case.
It was a different story with the police report. Although we produced written evidence that we were not at home at the time of the alleged assaults and showed the police her bizarre letters, the police were not convinced.
The investigating officer even came to my home with a team to snap photographs of the place where the alleged assaults occurred.
Then, out of the blue, I received a call telling me to buy a plane ticket to repatriate the maid.
The supervisor of the home in which the maid was placed told me she had appealed to the police to send the maid back as she and her staff could not handle her.

My family have already encountered 2 errant maids and it so disgusting talking to either MOM or the police.

The first runaway maid 2 years ago make a false claim that my wife burned her with a hot iron. Apparently she burned herself with the hot iron before she ran to the Pinoy Embassy. The pinoy embassy called us and told her that they would rest the case if we pay her $2000 and buy her a ticket back. Of course we refused since we did not do it and told them to make police report. As usual my wife was called up for interview. 2 weeks later, the IO called to inform that the case was dropped because the maid confessed that she lied. We are told to send her back to pinoy and will be barred from SGP. Our agent refused to get involved and told us that if we sent her back we will have to absorb her loan. We argued and threatened with lawsuit and they relented but we will have to buy her a ticket. We are very angry because the police did not take any action against the maid making false accusation and report. This is creating precendents for all the errant maids who want getaway! By doing that, they avoid the loan and get a free ticket home.

Our most current incident (the maid is still missing) is even more bizzare. This indy maid worked for us for 1 month. Then she wrote a note that she will be home late cos her sister got some problem. She never came back. 2 days later we found her with her banga boyfriend, the police told us to send her back to indy. We bought to the agent and told them about the police advice. We signed the cancellation form but agent did not act (they probably wanted to transfer her out to avoid losing on their loan). 3 days later she ran away from the agent. The agent only informed us 3 weeks later about the runaway when we questioned why is the maid still under our employment. We called the police and was told that since the agent have already make a report, there's no need for us to get involved. Of course we wanted a status, so my wife called the IO of the case. Guess what? The IO makes sacarstic remarks like if you are worried then don't hire a maid. When my wife mentioned that she is also worried about my 8 years old gal safety (since the maid knew we wanted to send her back and she have banga boyfriend), the IO commented that my gal is 8 years old and should be able to scream and run away from intruder. ??? What attitude is this? Of course we lodged a complain with the Police Customer Service.

Then we called MOM regarding the maid running away from agent because agent refused to send her back even with my earlier police advice. MOM simply replied that it's our responsibility. But I told MOM that yes, when maid first ran away, we tried every effort to locate her and we found her. We are sending her back to indy. Except unscrupulous agent did not only cancel her WP but let her run away. MOM gave the same reply - employer's responsibility. So I questioned if her WP is cancelled now, and we only found her 2 years later badly sick, are we liable for all her expenses? MOM (Sheila) simply reply the same - Employer responsiblity. What the heck? All from the script!!! It's almost a month now, my $5k bond is gone. And I will be fine for her overstay if the maid is ever found.

We are disappointed with MOM, we pay levy but we get no help from them at all.

Why is our law 'protecting' these type of 'bloody' maids and leaving our employers in distress and angry !!
Should these maids be jailed so as to give others a serious warning that such false reportings cannnot be condoned ??

Yesterday's papers reported a case of a Indonesian maid, putting detergent into the milk powder of her employer and was discovered in time before the babies drank their milk.
I'll await to see how this maid be charged in court.
