Why was I charged 65 cents for card upgrade?

A trip from Pasir Ris to Raffles Place cost STOMPer Mike $1 more than the usual fare, as he was unnecessarily charged 65 cents for 'card upgrade'.

This STOMPer would like to know why he incurred this cost and what it was for. He says:

"I would like to share with all STOMPers about a new ez-link charge known as 'card upgrade deduction'.

"This morning, I took bus number 3, which is my usual route to transfer at Pasir Ris MRT Station so that I can travel to my workplace at Raffles Place.

"After tapping the ez-link card successfully upon alighting ($0.69), I tapped my card at the MRT gantry where the ez-link card was rejected.

"I asked for help at the station control.

"As usual, no questions were asked by the SMRT officer and within 10 seconds, whatever he needed to do was completed and I managed to pass through the gantry.

"The interesting part came when I exited at Raffles Place MRT Station.

"I noticed that the transfer rebate was missing and upon checking, there was also an additional charge of $0.65 for 'card upgrade deduction'.

"So a daily trip that costs $1.71 (including $0.50 transfer rebate) cost $2.86 today! Can the relevant authorities comment?"
