A 64-year-old senior monk has died after vomiting blood while relaxing in a herbal sauna room in Phetchabun province.
Police said another monk who was in the room with him was in a critical condition after being rushed to hospital.
Luang Por Pichai, 64, the abbot of Wat Sirirat Vanaram in Chon Daen district, Phetchabun, frequently enjoyed a sauna during his free time, police said.
At 9.30am on Wednesday, police received a report he had died after vomiting blood while in a herbal sauna.
A 35-year old monk, his nephew, who was also in the sauna room, had been rushed to a nearby hospital and was in a critical condition, police said.
One of the laymen in the temple told police that the abbot had not been seen for at least two hours before he was found lying in a pool of his blood inside the sauna about 9.30pm on Tuesday.
The investigation team said there were no ventilating windows in the self-made steam room.
Pol Gen Suebpong Klinsukhon, Superintendent at Chon Daen police station, said investigators suspected he had suffocated or that possibly a toxic herb in the sauna was the cause of death.
