KULAI: A 53-year-old Singaporean monk and his female companion were arrested for allegedly hitting their Indonesian maid with a hammer after she rejected his marriage proposal.
Police confirmed that the incident took place at a temple along Jalan Lengkongan here last Thursday where the young maid was working for the monk and the 46-year-old woman. She was said to have refused the monk’s advances and request to marry, causing the pair to assault her.
But the maid managed to flee at around midnight and ran to the neighbours for help.
District deputy police chief Deputy Supt Mohad Idris Samsuri said the 23-year-old maid made a police report at 12.30pm on Friday, alleging that the pair had hit her on the head and body.
He said the victim had to be treated at Hospital Temenggong Sri Maharaja Tun Ibrahim here for her injuries.
The pair has been arrested for investigations under Section 324 of the Penal Code for intentionally causing hurt, he added.
The monk is said to have been staying in Kulai for the past 20 years after moving there from Skudai.
Sources revealed that the monk has been visiting Malaysia on a social visit pass and left Johor once a month before re-entering.
It is believed that the last time he left and re-entered Malaysia was in September last year.
He is also a controversial figure; he reportedly adopted a three-year-old girl and a baby boy previously.
