KUALA LUMPUR: The security van which was hijacked in front of a shopping mall in Cheras on Monday was robbed of RM8.24mil in cash, double the amount that was initially thought to be stolen.
The robbers escaped with eight sacks of cash and left behind four more containing about RM2mil in the van.
City CID chief Senior Asst Comm II Datuk Ku Chin Wah said police were investigating the possibility of an inside job.
Police are also investigating if the robbers were well versed with the van’s security feature that stalled the engine, as soon as it took a route that was not pre-programmed.
Meanwhile, four security guards aged between 30 and 40 have been remanded for four days to assist in investigations.
The robbery occurred at 7.10pm as the security guards were waiting to collect the day’s earnings from a telecommunications store in the mall.
Three men in ski masks and armed with pistols appeared and ordered the guards out of the van before they drove off with the vehicle and the cash.
