MOM warns public of person impersonating MOM officer

SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) has warned the public of a person claiming to be one of its officers.
The ministry said the impersonator has asked members of the public to transfer money to an account to settle issues related to their stay in Singapore or work pass application.
It added that MOM officers will not make such calls regarding any funds transfers.
It also advised members of the public not to transfer any money to the caller and to call the police immediately at 999 to report the matter.
The police have also issued a warning regarding scams.
In a Facebook post, the police said in the first four months of this year, they received more than 300 reports of various phone scams in which at least S$1.6 million had been cheated.
The police said recently, there has been a re-emergence of a type of impersonation scam in which scammers claiming to be court officials or police officers will allege that the victim is involved in a court or police case.
Scammers usually direct victims to transfer or remit money to designated bank accounts to exonerate his involvement in the police or court case.
The police reminded the public that government agencies would not ask members of the public to disclose personal details such as bank account numbers or make any transfer of funds over the phone. - CNA/al
