Why: This is a breakfast for champions. A substantial onion, tomato and mushroom omelette is served with a grilled pork sausage and a small salad on the side.

Why: Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside - this is one fun way to eat veggies.

Why: The Italian pork sausage snaps back smartly when you bite into it, the sauerkraut (pickled cabbage) cuts through the richness and best of all, the hotdog bun isn't sweet.



4 CHILLI CRAB SANDWICH

Why: Why bother shelling crabs? This open-face sandwich offers the best parts of a chilli crab dish - lots of crabmeat, spicy sauce and bread. Coriander and kaffir lime leaves add a fresh burst of flavour.



5 CHICKEN BRIYANI

Why: What a great idea - crispy fried chicken on fluffy briyani rice, with a slightly tart fish curry on the side.



6 BRAZILIAN CHEESE BUNS WITH SOYBEAN FLOUR

Why: These chewy buns are like a Brazilian version of ham cheen pang - very addictive.



7 CROISSANT

Why: It's big, light and crispy. Good on its own or slathered with butter and jam.



8 MAGGI GORENG AYAM

Price: $6

Where: Al-Jilani Restaurant, 127 Bencoolen Street, open 24 hours

Why: This is perfect supper food - instant noodles jazzed up with chunks of fried chicken and strips of cabbage in a spicy mee goreng sauce.



9 CRISPY CHICKEN

Price: $9.80

Where: Miss Clarity Cafe, 205 Upper Thomson Road, tel: 6256-2008, open: Tuesdays to Sundays, 11am to 11pm, closed on Mondays

Why: The crust on this breaded chicken cutlet is crispy. Roast potatoes, vegetables and a black pepper sauce round off a good meal.



10 KING PRAWN DUMPLINGS

Price: $3.50 for three

Why: The skin looks suspiciously thick but turns out to be soft and yielding. The plump prawns and chives inside make this a delicious treat.



11 OTAK

Price: $1.10 for large and $0.50 for small

Where: Lee Wee & Brothers, six outlets including Tangs Market, Tangs Orchard B1, open: Mondays to Saturdays, 10.30am to 9pm; Sundays, 11am to 8pm

Why: There are always customers buzzing around the stall in Tangs Market. These spicy fish parcels are fantastic in a DIY sandwich.



12 CHEESE STOCK

Price: $2

Where: Amande, Tangs Market, Tangs Orchard B1, open: 11am to 9.30pm daily

Why: A cross between a quiche and a cheesecake, this half-savoury, half-sweet treat is a layered delight. A brioche base is topped with crunchy almond cake and creamy cheese and then baked.



13 FRIED CHICKEN WINGS

Price: $7.50 for six pieces

Where: Ikea Restaurant, two outlets including 317 Alexandra Road Level 2, tel: 6786-6868, open: 9.30am to 10pm daily

Why: These wings are big, juicy and not greasy. Just the thing to fuel a marathon shopping trip.



14 MUSHROOM AND CHEESE CREPE

Price: $4.20

Why: Easy to eat on the run, this crepe is filled with yummy sauteed mushrooms and melted cheddar cheese. It is crispy at the edges and soft inside. Addictive.



15 ROJAK

Price: $2.50 to $5

Where: Mun Theng Fang Rojak, Block 90 Whampoa Drive 01-87, open: 1 to 10.30pm daily

Why: The salad has bite - the sauce is not too sweet and has a nice, spicy kick. A sprinkle of lime zest perks it up and the crispy, freshly grilled youtiao is irresistible.



16 HOKKIEN MEE

Price: $3

Where: Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee, 01-59 Block 90 Whampoa Drive, open: Mondays to Saturdays, 10.30 to 1am, closed on Sundays

Why: Not the most famous stall in Singapore but the Hokkien Mee here is flavourful and the sambal is punchy.



17 PENANG ROTI BABI

Price: $5

Where: Rose Apple Deli, 85 East Coast Road, tel: 6348-6335 open: Tuesdays to Sundays, 11.30am to 9.30pm (closed on Mondays)

Why: This old-style treat is hard to find in Singapore. You cannot go wrong with local-style French toast stuffed with pork and vegetables and served with a zingy Worcestershire dip on the side.



18 CHICKEN HOT POT

Price: $9.80

Where: Chicken Hot Pot at 8 Shenton Way B1-21, tel: 6220-8048, open: Mondays to Saturdays, 11am to 9pm, closed on Sundays

Why: Here is a two-in-one treat. First, savour succulent pieces of chicken in a spicy sauce with hot rice. Then, pour hot chicken stock into the claypot and enjoy Part Two: chicken in delicious soup.



19 SUIJIAO GUOTIAO

Price: $2 from Guan Zhou Noodles and Porridge at Hook Hua Eating House, 01-1688 Block 111 Jalan Bukit Merah, open: 6am to 2.30pm daily

Why: What an excellent deal. You get four plump prawn dumplings for $2, and the rice noodles are dressed in a piquant sauce.

In the case of omelette, I still prefer the one served in Hans restaurant near Dhoby Gaut MRT. Only about $4.50 but very nice.
