<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"-->MINISTER Mentor Lee Kuan Yew was honoured last night by one of the world's largest and oldest philanthropic organisations, Rotary International, which gave him a rare award.
He received the Rotary International Award Of Honour, in recognition of his 'long and visionary leadership in Singapore and in the international community'.
Reading the citation before presenting the award at a gala dinner at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Rotary International president Lee Dong Kurn of South Korea described it as a 'small token of the great respect that you have earned for your many achievements'.
He described how MM Lee, who was prime minister of Singapore from 1959 to 1990, transformed the country 'into a modern, vibrant, safe and prosperous country', raising Singaporeans' quality of life 'to First World standards'.
With Rotary clubs around the world best known for their campaign to root out polio in young children, the Rotary International president also cited Singapore's 'unrivalled public health care system'.
He noted that MM Lee's 'grasp of global politics has made you a great statesman'. 'Your achievements, global outlook and vision complement the Mission and Objectives of Rotary International.'
Past recipients of the award have included United Nations secretary-general Ban Ki Moon, and former United States president Bill Clinton.
The dinner was attended by some 600 Rotarians from Singapore and around the region.
Accepting the award, MM Lee, 85, thanked the Rotary International president and added a wry remark of his own.
He quoted a Chinese proverb which says that 'when the coffin is closed, then you have the final verdict', and explained that it served as a 'reality check' for him. 'When I am praised on occasions such as for honorary degrees, I try to keep my sense of proportion by recalling this proverb,' he said to laughter from the audience. 'After I have left the scene, the biographers, historians and editors will track my career and pronounce their verdicts.'
