JOHOR BAHRU: A Singaporean who was reported missing by his wife, about six months ago, was finally located on Wednesday in a shallow grave at a rubber estate in Selangor, Malaysia.

Initial police investigations have indicated the 40-year-old man was murdered elsewhere and his body buried at the rubber estate in Kajang.

A local man, who was arrested by the police on July 12 in connection with the victim's disappearance, led a police task force to the recovery of the remains.

The task force was set up to trace the Singaporean, following a missing person report lodged by his wife on Jan 26.

The suspect, in his 40s, is facilitating police investigations into the murder of the Singaporean who was kidnapped. The victim's wife had paid a RM12,000 ransom to secure his release.

It could not be ascertained if the ransom money was part payment.

Johor police chief Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff, who declined to give the name of the victim, said the victim's wife had paid the RM12,000 ransom money, about three weeks after she had lodged the missing person report.

He said the police only found out the Singaporean was kidnapped after the wife had paid the ransom money.

"We are awaiting the post-mortem report to ascertain the cause of the victim's death," he told a press conference at the Johor police contingent here on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the police solved 45 burglaries in the city, following the arrest of six illegal immigrants at a shophouse in Taman Tasek here last Friday.

The three men - two Indonesians and a Myanmar - and three Indonesian women were nabbed about 1am, based on information from the public.

Mohd Mokhtar said that among others, the police seized four digital video disc players, camera and four handbags.

He said the suspects, aged between 21 and 30, were remanded until July 28 to facilitate investigations.
