Minimum wage soon

Reports by MARTIN CARVALHO, YUEN MEIKENG, P. ARUNA and SYLVIA LOOI

KUALA LUMPUR: The Government has decided on the national minimum wage and the details will be announced by the Prime Minister. Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who disclosed this, said an agreement had been reached betw een various parties and the Human Resources Ministry. “We have reached an agreement with the employers, workers' unions and the ministry submitting their proposals.

“The Prime Minister will make the announcement at the appropriate time, which will be sometime soon,” he said after opening the World Kidney Day celebrations at Dataran Merdeka yesterday. However, Muhyiddin did not elaborate if a fixed amount had been reached by the Government in the National Wages Consultative Council the tripartite body comprising employer and employee organisations and the Government.

He said all relevant factors such as cost of living, inflation, demographic trends, the effects on employers and the economic impact were taken into account during deliberations. “We believe there is basis for this (minimum wage) but we don't want to make a rash decision,” he said. On whether the implementation of a minimum wage would see a reduction in the number of public holidays, he said that had yet to be considered.

Muhyiddin said workers should enhance productivity to ensure the country remains competitive with developed nations. It was reported that the Govern-ment was looking at a minimum wage of between RM800 and RM1,000 for some 3.2 million workers in the private sector. Close to 33% of such workers are said to be earning less than RM700 a month below the income poverty line of RM763 a month.

On Friday, Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subrama-niamsaid the minimum wage policy was expected to be announced later this month. Last month, Malaysian Employers Federation executive director Sham-suddin Bardan warned that some 200,000 small-time employers are likely to cease operations as they could not afford to pay higher salaries.

He added that the implementation of an across-the-board minimum wage would incur a production cost increase of between 30% and 40%. In IPOH, Dr Subramaniam said the ministry was waiting for the announcement date from the Prime Minister's Office.

Subramaniam: Minimum wage won't cause economy to collapse

KUALA LUMPUR: Implementing a minimum wage policy will not cause the country's economy to collapse, said Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam.

He said countries that had implemented minimum wage policies did not collapse.

"To say that our country will collapse because of minimum wage is not true," he said during a press conference after the Astro Broadcast Traineeship graduation ceremony here Monday.

Recently, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad raised concerns that minimum wage would have a negative impact on the country.

Why than have hdb flats for 1k earners? If ALL sinkies are fussy, than no one in peesai would want 1k job. The truth is many sinkees are working in tough jobs. Only employers are pussies. Employers in peesai want the easy way out and cheap labour. No wonder no peesai company can survive outside peesai. Always be a small fry.

Employers in peesai should ask themselves whether their own spoilt brat children want to work for them. No their children wanna go overseas and worked in google or electronic arts and earn big bucks and help themselves to a well stock pantry. Employers in peesai are shit and stingy. Other cuntries also got fussy workers, Ive worked overseas also. Ive seen how employers retain and keep their staff for years. in peesai employers want china mei mei work 2 weeks straight, two days offf a month, no ot pay, lots of ot and last but not least to suck their ball sack and call them handsome when they are ugly like pigs.

You are right. Usually can tell how a company treat its staff by looking at pantry. Most doggie local companies give you one water cooler tank if you are lucky. But those British or American MNCs give you fridge la, Espresso coffee machines etc.

Some of them don't even have their own taps as they rely on communal building toilets. So if you are sibei suay, you need to step out of office to fill your bottle with tap water from outside toilets.

MTUC: We will not accept anything less than RM900

Reports by MARTIN CARVALHO, YUEN MEIKENG, P. ARUNA and SYLVIA LOOI

PETALING JAYA: The proposed minimum wage should be at least RM900 per month, says MTUC. The amount would help to lift the poor out of poverty, its president Mohd Khalid Atan said yesterday.
He added that RM900 should be the basic wage rate and it should not be inclusive of allowances, adding that the policy should be revised every two years.

“We will not accept anything less than RM900. “If it is going to be below RM900, what's the point of the Government trying to become a high-income nation?” he asked. Mohd Khalid said the minimum wage should be above the poverty line of RM720 in the peninsula, RM780 in Sabah and RM760 in Sarawak.

He was commenting on Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin's statement that the Government had reached an agreement with the private sector on the need for a minimum wage. Muhyiddin said the Prime Minister will make an announcement on the policy at an appropriate time.

Chua: Have RM1,000 minimum wage in Opposition states first

PETALING JAYA: DAP has been criticised for demanding that the minimum wage be set at RM1,000 but not recommending such a move in Opposition-controlled states. MCA Young Professionals Bureau
chairman Datuk Chua Tee Yong suggested that DAP propose the wage base for the Pakatan Rakyat-ruled states of Selangor, Kedah, Kelantan and Penang first.

“At least they should implement their own proposal of minimum wage in their government-linked companies (GLCs) or government-linked investment companies (GLICs). However, nothing has been done so far,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Chua, who is Deputy Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister, pointed out that Pakatan’s Buku Jingga (orange book) had said the coalition strived to provide a minimum household income of RM4,000 a month.

“But on the other hand, Pakatan MPs have suggested fixing the minimum income at between RM1,000 and RM1,200. “So, even if we were to add the total income of both husband and wife, Pakatan’s target of RM4,000 would not be attainable,” he said.

Chua said that in order to achieve Pakatan’s objective, the country would have to bear a burden of RM93bil as the Government would need to top up the monthly income of each household to RM4,000. Such a scenario would certainly lead our nation to bankruptcy. It is beneficial to set a minimum wage. However, this should depend on the financial capabilities of the respective employers as different sectors vary from one to another,” he said.

It was reported that the Government was looking at a minimum wage of between RM800 and RM1,000 for some 3.2 million workers in the private sector.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the Government had decided on the national minimum wage and the details would be announced by the Prime Minister soon.

Chua said the bureau was of the view that fixing the minimum wage at RM800 was too low as the poverty line in the peninsula was RM720, while it was RM780 in Sabah and RM760 in Sarawak. “Thus, it will be more appropriate if minimum wage is fixed at RM900. It is recommended that even by having such a minimum wage, other employee benefits should remain unchanged,” he said.

Manufacturers want minimum wage policy implemented in stages

By YVONNE LIM

PETALING JAYA: At least 10,000 workers could lose their jobs if the national minimum wage policy is not implemented properly. Representatives from 16 business and manufacturing associations told a press conference here Tuesday that they were concerned a sudden increase in the minimum wage would adversely affect productivity.

"A sudden and substantial increase in wages will result in the closure of some 200 small plastics manufacturing companies. This will cause permanent loss of 10,000 jobs. "The policy should be introduced in phases over a period of time to give companies and businesses time to adjust.

"This will ensure productivity is maintained, and Malaysia and her manufacturers remain competitive," said Malaysian Plastics Manufacturers Association president Lim Kok Boon.

PUTRAJAYA: Details of the highly-anti-cipated minimum wage will be announced on May 1 - Labour Day.

Until then, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said he would not make any comment on the issue.

“If I tell you now, I would be letting the cat out of the bag,” the Prime Minister said after launching the country's first lightweight composite Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinder here yesterday. Separately, Najib lambasted DAP for opting out of the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) on the Lynas rare earth plant, saying the issue had to be handled by all quarters as it needed a solution above partisan politics.

“It is not a question of politics; it is a question of the interest of the people and the country. I don't understand why they are boycotting it,” he said. DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng had said it was to avoid Barisan Nasional from using the Opposition's presence in the committee to “legitimise the Lynas plant”. Najib also declined to comment on former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin's predictions on Barisan's performance in the general election.

Daim, a long-time Umno treasurer, told Nanyang Siang Pau that Barisan was expected to win easily only in Johor, Malacca and Pahang. In Shah Alam, Najib called on students to consider all information they receive with maturity and wisdom. “Freedom with responsibility. That will be our philosophy when amending the University and University Colleges Act.

“We don't want to close your minds. Go and listen to all sides, and then make a consideration with maturity and wisdom. “They (Opposition) can promise the sun, the moon and the galaxy. They can promise, but we can deliver,” he said when launching the Yayasan Sukarelawan Siswa (Student Volunteer Foundation) at Universiti Teknologi Mara here yesterday.

In KUALA LUMPUR a day earlier, Najib, who went for a routine check-up at the National Heart Institute (IJN), said he has been given a clean bill of health. He advised fellow Malaysians to go for regular check-ups. “I did my regular check-up at IJN yesterday (Tuesday). Doctors gave me a clean bill of health, Alhamdullilah. I suggest more people do regular check-ups,”

Najib tweeted yesterday morning.
The Prime Minister also wished the best for parents waiting for their children's SPM results, which was announced later in the day.
