Mindset change - US investors now prefer USA

Brazil is best overseas investment destination

New York: Nearly half of the American private equity executives surveyed prefer their home turf for investment, in contrast to the perceived notion of emerging markets offering best opportunities at present, a survey by global consultancy KPMG said.

According to the poll of senior private equity (PE) executives in the US, nearly half (48 per cent)of the respondents said North America was the best region to invest based on competition, relative valuations, projected returns, economic outlook and ease of doing business.

The report stated, this was "despite the perceived consensus that investment opportunities are ripest among the emerging markets."

"While many have buzzed over the last few years about the PE opportunities in emerging markets, it's clear that many US investors feel more comfortable on their home turf," KPMG's US Private Equity Group national lead partner Shawn Hessing said.

When specifically asked, which of the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) nations they viewed as the best investment place, 42 per cent of the respondents favoured Brazil.

"PE investments are by their nature complicated, and investors must consider how a country's regulatory and political environment may impact a business. This becomes more difficult in a foreign and in some cases a distant country," Hessing added.

The survey participants were evenly divided when asked which sector globally offers the most attractive returns now.

Financial services and health care sector each led with 22 per cent of survey respondents favoring them, followed by infrastructure and energy at 20 per cent each. While, just 13 per cent of those surveyed selected real estate.
