Three weeks after the unfortunate passing of SAF medical officer Dr Allan Ooi, MINDEF finally issued an official statement about his work which was quoted by Allan in his farewell letter (read it here) as the main cause of his departure.

In a letter published on ST Forum today (read full letter here) by Colonel Darius Lim, MINDEF seeks to downplay the role played by SAF in the chain of events leading to Allan’s fateful decision to leave for Australia while leaving many key questions unanswered.

The gist of his message is:

1. Allan informed his superior that he was unhappy at work and was considering leaving SAF. (no dates or time frame were stated).

2. On 3 October last year, his superior offered him an alternative appointment which he would be interested in.

3. Allan did not get back to his superior and went AWOLed 2 weeks later on 15 October 2008.

MINDEF’s rather simplistic explanation defies common logic and reasoning. Will a promising young doctor risked ruining his entire career in medicine when there are other viable options available to him?

Obviously, the so call 'alternative appointment' was so disappointing that Allan Ooi decided to go AWOL.

This is a typically example of civil service don't give a damn if you aren't a scholar.

"Yes, we hear you, but sorry, since you are not a scholar, you are not in our priority"

I have this bad feeling that the 'alternative' involved carrying sandbags in DB.
