SINGAPORE - A driver was crushed to death by a fallen raintree on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident happened along the junction of Thomson Hills Drive and Yio Chu Kang Road, a spokesperson for the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said.

The tree, which was uprooted because of an intense microburst at the area, fell on a Honda Freed and killed the driver, 32-year-old Chua Loong Wai. It is not known if the car was moving at that time.

A microburst is a localized, powerful descending air draft column that produces damaging winds at high speed.

The driver, who was alone, was pronounced dead at around 2.50pm.

The SCDF spokesperson said: "We received a call at 2.07pm."

"Two fire engines, one ambulance, a DART team and 1 support vehicle were sent.

Said the spokesperson, "When we arrived we found that the man had already passed away.

"Two hydraulic spreader cutters were used to extricate the man."

In a statement released by the national agency for maintaining trees, National Parks (NParks), preliminary inspection show that "the tree was uprooted due to severe weather conditions".

NParks also said that the tree was last pruned in January 2010 to reduce the weight of the crown.

According to local reports, another fallen tree had also fell along Upper Thomson Road. The tree blocked all three lanes of the road.

A spokesperson for NParks, said: "We are sad to hear that the driver has died.

"We understand there was strong wind and rain at the time of the incident. The tree was removed at around 4.45pm, and we will be inspecting the trees in the vicinity.

Added the spokesperson, "Our priority now is to accord assistance to the family of the deceased."

Police have classified the case as an unnatural death and are investigating

it's a well-known phenomenon to airplane pilots/control towers, basically those in the aeronautical industries will know.

but that happening along the junction of Thomson Hills Drive and Yio Chu Kang Road?

Selatar airbase is round the corner ha ha ha...that what I was thinking about from that road out it leads to Munshi Abdullah Road in Teacher's Housing Estate on the opposite, in my younger days I have regularly jogged through Thomson Hills Drive to Yio Chu Kang Rd then towards Sembawang Hills Rd...

I have not heard or seen MICROBURST..or else the motorcycles or racing cars of the grand prix..would have been..'taken up'...:D just say, we didn't maintain the tree & when it rained heavily it fell....but can not admit mistake...say MICROBURST... ha ha ha ha

how did they know got microburst? they got microburst sensors or monitors?

next time buy car/life insurance, better make sure got insured under 'microburst':D

hmm, if seletar airbase got those weather radar, they should be able to map out the area prior/during/after the microbust event.

and if they are able to prove, rather than just say "microburst". i think it's fair. the guy was really unlucky.

a few trees around my area pretty much had its' roots uplifted n the fell over. not a small tree, though smaller than the one that killed the 32yo man. one thing i notice is the roots of the tree looked relatively "small" compared to the length n size of the tree.

tree looked similarly sized to the below.

how did they know got microburst? they got microburst sensors or monitors?

They can't say, we did not maintain the drains ( look at the picture) the soil around the trees (Nfark, got no time), when it rained too heavy the water table became waterlogg due to some choked drainage resulting the loosening of the massive tree roots. This may have occurred for a long period of time & many rainfaill, exaberated by recent abnormal short burst of localized rainfall, plus the tree may have already being weaken by pests like termites. But they ask thamby sitting in the corner office from the Univerity of Pondicherry.."pillayosamy, what excuse can we give?".." in indiaa...we say microburst!!"..

ha ha ha

NParks is still using Microburst Ver. 7, While Nature have upgraded theirs to Ver. 10. They also probably did not download the patches available at www.mocroburst.com
