Michael Jackson on forgiving parents.

In his much-publicised speech at Oxford Union in 2001, Michael Jackson concluded with the thought of Mahatma Gandhi. The speech 'Heal the Kids' was his rare personal account in which he spoke about his own childhood and the reasons why chose to make public his hopes for future generations.

"You probably weren't surprised to hear that I did not have an idyllic childhood. The strain and tension that existed with my own father is well documented’" MJ said. He describe his father as a "taciturn task-master" who wouldn't show emotion because of his own upbringing . And, Jackson says, he did not want his own children to judge him similarly.

Concluding the speech, he quoted Gandhi: "To all of you tonight who feel let down by your parents, I ask you to let down your disappointment. To all of you tonight who feel cheated by your fathers or mothers, I ask you not to cheat yourself further. And to all of you who wish to push your parents away, I ask you to extend your hand to them instead. I am asking you, I am asking myself, to give our parents the gift of unconditional love, so that they too may learn how to love from us, their children. So that love will finally be restored to a desolate and lonely world.... Mahatma Gandhi said: The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong".

Jackson also used footage of Gandhi in his much-acclaimed chartbuster 'Man in the Mirror'. The video featured footage of famous people, who have endeavoured to 'make that change' including Martin Luther king, Mother Teresa and Mahatma Gandhi.

The Jackson family is an example of a dysfunctional family. The shortcomings of the father screwed the family.

Sporeans ought to understand this. Only have to look at what the FATHER of Sporeans has done. :)

"Got 3 Meals 2 Eat, Just Look After Your Grandchildren Teo Ho. I Don't Want U 2 CHAP TAI CHI"

Everyone has shortcomings. However, nothing alters the fact that the net result of the discipline and work ethic MJ's father imposed on his children produced one of the most successful stories the music world has ever seen.

The same goes with LKY. He's no saint but if it wasn't for his iron will and his knuckle dusters, Sinkieland would not be where it is today.

Its obvious that MJ is talented. I think he would have succeeded even without his father bullying. He might have achieved the same level of success AND been happier.

Without LKYs stop at two policies there would have been more Sporeans.

When you consider the amount LKY, family, cronies lost & looted there might have been a fairer distribution of wealth in Spore. Costs of everything would have been cheaper. Hundreds of thousands of people would not have left Spore.

I don't believe the fantasy that LKY is responsible for the success of Spore. There was many in the old guard, citizens, foreigners who help create Spore.

You can speculate with a shitload of "what ifs" but it you can't rewrite history.

Behind every talent is a driving force that nurtures that talent. Same goes with Tiger Woods. His father played a pivotal role in the development of his golf career. Daddy may have taught him how to screw around too but that's a different story.

LKY's old guard was a formidable team but the fact remains that none of the others had the leadership and dynamism that LKY possessed. Goh Kheng Swee, Hon Sui Sen, Toh Chin Chye and the rest of the gang were technocrats not leaders. Only LKY had the ruthlessness, charisma and personality to fight political battles and win.

As for LKY's stop at 2 policy, most don't realise that it was aimed at the Malays for obvious reasons. Unfortunately, the Chinese were too obedient while the Malays just ignored the policy. The graduate mother scheme was thus introduced to put further pressure on the Malays. In the end, LKY realised that it was too risky to target a particular segment of the population given the fact that sinkieland is surrounded by 300 million of their kind. Opening the floodgates became the only option.

Without the non Muslim imports, Singapore would be a very different place today.

The only one's interested in re-writting history are people like LKY. They are the one who have things to hide, failures, scandals,...

Don't know if the stop at 2 were only targetting at Malays. What I know is that LKY is an elitist. The stop at two policy didn't apply if the mother was a grad. It applies to equally to uneducated Malays & chinese

It takes a bit of gray matter to read between the lines. When the policy was formulated, how many female Malay grads were there? ;)

Grads were a rare thing in those days, even among the Chinese. Unlike today where you will find them everywhere: driving taxis & unemployed,

PAP is supposed to be the super efficient party. Didn't anyone in the PAP even bother to monitor the impact back then.

How about now? I understand that some things never change? lol
