Transformers director Michael Bay has agreed to develop and adapt the Tom Clancy video game, Ghost Recon, for the big screen.
Working alongside Ubisoft Motion Pictures and Warner Bros, Bay will begin work on the film after the release of Transformers 4, with reports suggesting that casting for Ghost Recon could take place as soon as July.
The popular video game franchise, which has sold more than 25 million copies, and is based on the novels of Tom Clancy follows the movements of a group of undercover special agents who must protect the US president, using the latest technology to go behind enemy lines.
Jean-Julien Baronnet, CEO of Ubisoft Motion Pictures said, "Having one of Hollywood’s boldest feature film directors attached to bringing Ghost Recon to the big screen is a dream come true for us. And with Warner Bros' unmatched track record of successfully producing, marketing and distributing big movies from the industry’s top talents, we think this project has huge potential.”
Explaining the popularity of the video game, Baronnet said, "These guys [the characters in the video games] don't belong to any specific organisation.
"They're in the field where the US troops are not supposed to be. It's a small team with very strong personalities and very specific skill sets. They’re using weapons nobody knows about but it's very grounded. It’s not sci-fi."
Bay is know for directing high-octane action films with stunning special effects and fans can expect Ghost Recon to be another visually impressive showing. His latest film, Pain and Gain, starring Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson, is released in the UK on August 28.
