Police in the southern Mexican state of Guerrero confirmed that at least 20 tourists had been kidnapped in Acapulco. The holidaymakers were thought to have recently arrived in the resort town from the town of Morelia in the neighboring state of Michoacan. Michoacan is the base for La Familia, a powerful drug cartel.
State prosecutors said they did not know the identity of the gunmen or the fate of those abducted. Mexican newspaper El Universal claimed that the tourists were travelling in at least four cars when they were kidnapped in the street.
