A SCHOOL teacher was convicted and sentenced to a total of six weeks' jail on Friday for maid abuse.
But Mat Nooh Sajari, 38, is appealing and is out on $10,000 bail.
The father of two was found guilty, after a five-day trial, of four charges of causing hurt to Ms Sulastri, 33, at his flat in Woodlands in 2007.
The court heard that between Feb 1 and 19 that year, he threw a pot lid at her, causing a small bruise over her right upper arm as she had warmed up gravy without permission.
On another occasion, he hurled a chair at her, causing her toes to bleed and swell.
On Feb 20, he kicked her in the abdomen and slapped her after accusing her of not making curry puffs properly. Half an hour later, he threw a cup at her.
Three days later, she ran away to the maid agent, and lodged a police report the next day.
His lawyer, Mr Edmond Pereira, had asked for fines to be imposed, saying the the maid's injuries were not serious.
With the conviction, he said his client was likely to lose his job.
Mat Nooh could have been fined up to $1,500 and/or jailed for up to 11/2 years on each of the four charges.
